Porky

Hello Everyone.

This is my 1st post on these forums. Well, I took my piggy to the vet last monday because he had the slobbers. They put him under anesthetics to grind down his rear molars which were trapping his tongue. It took him about a day or two to snap away from the drug effects. But he is extremely active and has plenty of appetite. He has been eating plenty of semi crushed pellets, oranges, grapefruit, and bananas. The only problem is that he's still drooling all over himself. Am I or my vet possibly missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

i suppose it's possible that some bits of tooth are still awkward. :-\ i don't know, really, sorry hun. i'm glad to hear he's eating, his teeth might just feel a bit funny, i really don't know, sorry. :-\ someone will be able to help though, i'm sure. O0 BIG HUGS AND KISSES TO YOU AND HIM :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

It can take a couple of days after they have had tooth work done to settle down as their mouths can be sore and they also take a good couple of days to realise they can eat again. Watch him carefully when he eats and make sure that he is actually eating the food and not dropping it again. They're very sneaky like that. My George done that all the time making me think he was eating but he wasn't. Also you should get him to eat some food that is a bit harder to help the teeth grind down. The hard bit on the spring greens and stuff like that.
Hope I have helped. :) Sorry to ramble on. I lost my George to tooth problems so I'm kinda paranoid about them now :)

Welcome to the forum.
You will need to find another vet(not easy,I know) but there is ansolutely no reason to aneasthetise a piiggy to do dental work.
This vet is obviously not used to piggies so she may have missed a spur on the back of the molars. These spurs can dig into the flesh making eating painful and difficult.
Put a peasize blob of Daktarin oral gel straight into the mouth,3 times a day. This is very soothing.Give the gel a few minutes to melt into the tissue before feeding.
It is not a good idea to give piggies oranges, grapefruit or other acidic foods like apple when they have a sore mouth. In fact these acidic foods should only be fed in moderation anyway, not everday. There are loads of foods that have vitimin C.Greens,kale,carrot,parsley,coriander,basil,celery,tomato,cucumber. The list is very long. There is a link at the top of this section to a good feeding guide.

You say your piggy is eating well and is well in himself,so he obviously is not in pain so it is possible that the teeth are not the only problem. There may be a blocked salivary gland. If the ptyalism continues, you will need to visit a vet again. What area are you in?,.There are a few vets around the country who can do dental work without sedation.
