I have my four year old Guinea pig who has what can only be described as a raised lump like an abscess on his back about the size of and old sixpence. This has always been there since I got him in November. However I have not had much contact with him for the last week other than cleaning as I have had a cold. Last night I had him on my lap and I checked the lump which is near his grease gland. I could see white creamy discharge similar to cream cheese in consistency. It is like an enlarged pimple. I squeezed it and the creamy stuff came out quite freely onto a tissue.Has anyone got any ideas what this problem is please. I have a vets appointment for 5.40 pm today but some advice would be really helpful. He is eating pooping and drinking and as far as I can judge he is acting as he normally would. Thanks Val

It sounds more like a sebaceous cyst. The vet will most likely clean with povidine iodine and recommend removing it if it keeps recurring.

Thanks so much for the reply. I have been worried stiff since I noticed it. I was on the internet and this forum searching for advice but some of the information was a bit unsettling to say the least. I'll take him and his male pal to the vet for a check this evening.

Hi just got back from the vets after taking Rupert and Maxwell. Rupert my white guinea pig saw the vet who confirmed Helens diagnosis of sebaceous cyst.
The vet drained the cyst (very messy process) he then checked his anal glands (another messy process).
I will have to keep an eye on the cyst to see if it reoccurs. I will also have to clean Rupert and Maxwell's anal glands more frequently as I was a bit embarrassed to see how badly they needed cleaning.
Maxwell (the long haired GP in my Avatar) has a lump on his shoulder that I will have to keep an eye on and if there are any changes in that I will need to go back for a further check. I am really pleased I was able to get into the vets today as I had been up all night worrying about taking Rupert to the vet. And I would like to thank Helen again for answering my query so quickly.

I have just settled the lads for the night. I am off to bed now as I am knackered due to no sleep last night and a day at work. I still don't know how I got through the day. Thanks for everyones concern.
