Hello there! I’m looking for some advice about my 5/6 year old female guinea pig Patches.

On Tuesday night, i picked her up after cleaning her cage, and noticed a large hard bump on her right chin right next to her mouth.

We took her into the vet the following morning because I had found that almost at midnight. They gave us antibiotics and painkillers to hopefully treat or better the bump. With her age, the vet did say that if we even wanted to get a culture sample or something to see what the lump is, it would be risky due to her being around 6 years old.

Shes now been on antibiotics and painkillers for 3 days now, and i’ve not seen improvement. She’s able to eat almost all of her pellets, i’m unsure if she’s drinking or not, but it seems like it, i’ve just started trying to track that. I’m unsure if she’s eating hay but i believe so, but she’s really not eating her veggies. I have suspicion that the lump being right next to her mouth is making it painful and or difficult to eat. I recently just saw her struggling to even eat a single pellet 😔

I’m unsure what to do at this point, as not to long ago i quite literally nursed her back from being deathly sick. ( She was extremely lathargic and not eating or drinking for days, i had to force feed her through a syringe every few hours) but since then she’s been doing incredibly well. The vet had said aside from the lump she was incredibly healthy and (almost) a good weight.

Another thing is, i’m not sure if we could even spend the money to get it sampled and then remove it if possible, especially considering her last sickness. I just feel stuck, especially morally because I don’t know how much pain she’s in or what is the best thing to do. I’ve provided pictures of the lump below, i would seriously appreciate any tips or suggestions and advice. I really can’t stand the thought to loose her now but that’s what my parents have been warning me about.

I’m actually unsure on how to give pictures but i have them if it would help

Sorry to hear that you may be dealing with an abscess.
It’s good that you went to the vets and have some medication.

If she’s struggling to eat try syringe feeding and offering her shredded vegetables.
Checking her weight daily will help you keep track of whether she’s eating enough.

One of the healthiest experts will be able to help better but it may well need another vet trip.
Holding you in my thoughts
