My poor piggie, Carmel, is currently on antibiotics in the hopes that she merely has an infection. However, I’m fairly certain that’s not at all what we’re dealing with. I found blood on her fleece about 6 weeks ago and then found a scratch on her partner, Gretel, so had assumed it had come from her. Then, two weeks ago, I found much more blood on their fleece and saw that it had actually come from Carmel - though we had gone a month without any issues since the first one. I immediately brought her to the vet, who x-rayed her, as you can see from the attached picture. He saw a lot of gas, causing bloating, and a round mass on her right side. He put her on TMS, in hopes that it was an infection, but said we could very well be dealing with a tumour. (She pooped and peed while she was there and ruled out either of those, as no blood was present in those samples.) It is likely a uteran issue .... Has anyone else seen something like this? Oh and also to mention, she is peeing a LOT and her bottom is always wet these days. Perhaps pressure from this mass on her bladder is causing this? She’s been on the TMS for two weeks with no more bleeding, but then I found more today. I’m calling the vet in the morning to make a follow up appointment but thought I’d check in here as well. Thanks!

I definitely see the mass, but don't have the expertise to know what it could be. Does she seem hormonal at all? I would wonder about a potential large ovarian cyst, which isn't uncommon in guinea pigs. I hope you get some answers and it's easily treatable!

I have no experience at all with ovarian cysts but to my novice eyes I thought ovarian cyst too. What does the lump feel like? Is it near the surface? Can you move it?

Sending lots of thoughts to you. I can see what you mean by a mass. Hoping it isn't something sinister!

Are ovarian cysts treatable without surgery? And they would cause bleeding and excessive urination? I think you’re most likely right, thank you for your thoughts!
I have a follow up appt with my vet so I will keep you posted.
Also, here’s a picture so you can see Carmel (from the outside this time!) and her partner Gretel. Carmel is on the left and Gretel is on the right.

One of our piggies Toffee has lots of large ovarian cysts, though they’ve never caused her any problems re weeing a lot or bleeding.
She’s never had treatment or surgery for them (she’s around 6 now!) but they don’t bother her often; every now and again she looks a bit puffed up and uncomfortable but she’s on open ended Metacam and she’s right back to normal again after a small dose.
But if there is bleeding I don’t think that would do the trick for your piggy unfortunately :(
Best of luck to you and Carmel; her and Gretel are beautiful!

Is your vet particularly knowledgeable with pigs? I only ask as I have never had a vet not sure whether it is ovarian cysts or not. Some of the symptoms (always being wet) where the same with my bumble who had an emergency spay but like you say could be just pressure on the bladder. The problem is that unless your vet is competent at diagnosing the correct decision any potential treatments could be a waste of time and money or simply make matters worse

Yes, luckily, my vet office that I go to is good with exotics. They’ve helped me greatly with my other piggies, through heart disease and bumblefoot (separate piggies).
So I went back today for a follow up visit and we had another set of x-rays done, to compare to two weeks ago. The mass is the same size, though shifted slightly and the bloating has also shifted. We’ve determined that it is a tumour, not a cyst. However, the course of action is first to reduce the bloating with a change of diet and another round of antibiotics, probiotics and metacam for discomfort. Then, we will monitor her on and on-going basis for any changes that could indicate the tumour is growing or causing issues. One of the piggie rescues I deal with has told me that she has two piggies with tumours who have been surviving for years with the same condition and are happy little girls!
Thank you so much to everyone here for all of the feedback and support!

Sending you hugs and healing vibes. I too am managing a piggy George with a lump/mass. Fingers crossed for both of them.xx
