Possible Baytril Cost ?

@Wiebke I would like some advice if that's ok. It will be 7 days on Wednesday evening when Fifi finishes the 7 day course of baytril 0.2ml twice daily for her toe.

Her toe has had some slow improvement, but still has a long way to go. She will have also been on metacam 0.15ml twice daily for two weeks.

I'm assuming due to the toes slow progress, the vet may suggest to continue with the baytril and metacam.

Is Baytril safe too be using longer then 7 days, and the metacam for longer then 14 days?

Do I possibly need to ask if a lower dose of baytril should be used, or possibly enquire about another antibiotic?

Please continue with the baytril and metacam. Both sare safe to use for much longer than just a week.

@Wiebke Firstly thanks for all the advice you have given me, it is of course most kind of you and is always appreciated.

I have a bit of a problem, I tried contacting the vet early yesterday morning, she has yet to get back to me and I'm just a little concerned as I'll explain.

Fifi was started intiially on the metacam 0.15ml twice daily on Friday 9th June for 5 days. It was then stopped then restarted on the 22nd June.

The baytril 0.2ml twice daily was also started initially on the 22nd June.

I am continuing to give to Fifi the meds up til this Wednesday. This is where I am waiting for the vets advice, but as you can see she has yet to get back to me as of yet probably very busy. The toe in question is slowly improving, but it is very slow, my main concern is the baytril.

Also I am aware Metacam could maybe be harmful to the kidneys if given long term? You may correct me if I'm wrong.

Coming back to the baytril I know this is maybe a strong medicine, and I am a little concerned due to the slow progress of the toe how much longer she is going to need this medication.

I've heard others giving the baytril for just over a month without any harm,

But from you're experience, how long is actually safe for a guinea pig to be on metacam and in particular Baytril?

Heres two pictures of her toe, if this is at all helpful before treatment and the second pic is on sunday. There has been a definate improvement but progress is very slow.

Thanks so much in advance,

Please continue with the baytril and metacam for as long as necessary and if necessary book an appointment if the toe has not yet completely swollen down by the time your baytril is running out.

I have had piggies on much stronger antibiotics for well over two months (and half a year on metacam) - Hywel survived his unusual post neutering op complications and lived happily for another another 5 1/2 years until just short of his 7th birthday. My Nerys was on metacam for her arthritis for over two years before she died aged 8 years; she needed highers dosages than yours in the end. Neither of the two ever had kidney problems. :)

Guinea pigs have a much faster metabolism than larger pets, which means that their kidneys are a lot less impacted and can cope well with high dosages over long periods. Experience over years has shown that metacam safe to use in guinea pigs in higher dosages and over longer periods.

Thanks for some very interesting and helpful info! :) I feel a little more comfortable with continuing the meds, being more in the know now.
I'm glad all was well with your piggies on the medicine, congratulations on the long years you had with them...some admirable ages there! :D I'll most definately look into booking another appointment as suggested!
