Hi all

Just been to vet with sister-in-law guinea pig, Hutch who had peed a funny colour about 2 wheeks ago, told by vet then to keep an eye on it and if no better to syringe cranberry/water mix which was dne but he i sstill peeing red so got a sample and took him to the vet

there was a lot of blood in the sample :)>>> so he is now on Baytril 1ml twice a day for 7 days and they have said if no better then they will take an xray to see what is going on but they didn't seem overly keen on surgery if that was needed :...

bascially I am trying to ask if anyone else has had their piggy go through bladder stone removal or if anyone can suggest anything else :)

Hey, try not to panic just yet. I have literally just come back from the vets as Gizmo had a possible stone and it turned out he didnt! He had a xray to confirm and now has metacam for a week.

But i would say that it would be worth trying to find a cavy vet if the one you seen wasnt, as i know that septrin is good to clear bladder infections and Gizmo had 2 weeks of this and didnt get any better so that why he had a xray and now he is on metacam to help with inflamed bladder.

I would keep an eye on the urine and give a probiotic with the baytril if you haven't already done so and see what happens after a week and then if no improvement get hold of a good cavy vet and go from there.

I know its very worrying as all ive done all morning is worry and wait for the phone call, but try not to panic just yet and see how the week course of baytril goes.

:)

It sounds like cystitis to me, and not necessarily a bladder stone.

My Telyn has just come down with very bloody urine as well. I do not suspect a bladder stone, as I have seen signs of a developing cystitis before I could identify the piggy; but of course she will have an x-ray if symptoms persist or come back.

2 ml of baytril in one day is a VERY high dose (normal is 0.4 ml twice daily), so make sure that the piggy has probiotics to keep the guts going! Baytril can be very harsh on the guts and cause loss of appetite/soft poo/weight loss and make a poor piggy feel really rotten.

When he has his x-ray, ask for one without GA; it's a lot easier on the piggy as well as on the purse.

My Minx went through two bladder stone ops, 14 months apart. If there is a stone, it depends on how big it is and where it is. It is usually not as easy for boars to get rid of bladder stones as their urethra is longer and has a bend in it.

Here is more info: The "bactrim" mentioned on guinea lynx can be best given the in form of pediatric septrin, 0.5 ml twice daily.

Hows Gizmo doing now?:)

Hi, my 'old boy' Teddy had to have a bladder stone removed last april. He started off with a little bit of blood in his urine then stopped eating,I had a feeling it was a stone so xrayed him and it was.
He had the stone removed and the op went well,he did go off food again a few days after the op but with syringing critical care and pain relief(metacam),he pulled through.
That was April last year and (touch wood) he's doing well at the moment with no recurrence so far.
He must be getting on for 7 now :)

Thanks muchly thats very reassuring to hear that he is doing well :) who did his surgery?

I did say to her thatt it may well be an infection or a stone and that if they needed to do xrays it would probably mean putting him under for a very short time

will keep you posted on how he goe after his antibiotcs. They mixed a few things in with it do you think that would be the probiotic - if not where can we get probiotics?:)

Teddy's surgery was done at Marple vets nr Stockport, my boss did the surgery and I monitored his anaesthetic,it's a bit scary on my own piggies but he's the 3rd one of mine that i've done for various ops.

The probiotics I use are either bio-lapis or lacto-B but I get them from work, they're not a POM so your vets should sell them to you over the counter.

Keep us posted on how Hutch's doing:) X

Hi
Been through all this kind of thing with my Darcy.
He had various courses of anti bs and ended up with an xray and open surgery for bladder stone. He made full recovery with one little set back and is now on cystaid long term.Bladder protection drug now being used for cavies. He has 0.5ml daily. My advice is just to get good vet and have tests done.

Me too, a few weeks ago. Made a good recovery but still seeing the vet because still in pain when weeing and painkillers not helping :(

Like everyone else says, make sure you get a good vet who has done it all before
