Hello me again :) I was wondering if you guys could shed some light on what could of caused my pig to randomly start bleeding/food colouring ?

I noticed a few hours ago she had all red stuff round her bum I didn’t think too much of it at first although worried I thought it could of been the raspberries I gave her that she has sat in etc... about an hour later she went for a wee on my lap and it was pure red I panicked and rung out of hours vets my friend said to wait until morning to see my original vet who’s really good with her.
She’s been weeing more and it looks clear again and no sign of anything in her bum but it randomly seems to come back?
Currently sitting here staying awake so I can get her to the vets first thing , she’s fine in herself eating/playing and napping
I jus wondered as I’ve never experienced this before. Thank you! Xx

Was there any crying when seeing? It is best to get her checked out at vets as you are doing.

When she wee’d what you think was
Blood she was on your lap? Was it think blood? Or watery urine tinged with redness?

It was quite watery but looked thick at the same time? Like it wasn’t jus a little bit it was quite red , no crying jus her normal chatty self
It’s so odd

The only time I have seen thick, red wee in a guinea pig was when Ruby had bladder sludge.
But by that point it was clear that she was very ill too - never seen it in an otherwise normal piggy.

Hi!

The red colour is actually porphyrine and not blood although blood may or may not be present. Apparently clear blood can test high for blood.
These intensely red pees are however typical for the onset of a cystitis (bladder wall infection) or a urinary tract infection (UTI). In the very first stages, symptoms are not yet quite consistent and you can see a mix of clear pees testing high in blood and red pees which can come clear of any blood when tested.

Please see a vet if you see more red pees, especially on a regular basis; pain squeaking when peeing and pooing, increased urination and thirst and potentially very strong/stale smelling urine.

If your vet doesn't prescribe it, please also ask for metacam (painkiller and anti-inflammatory, which comes wth different brand names) in addition to the antibiotic prescribed to help with discomfort and help with any inflammation in the bladder.

Hi!

Here is our illustrated bathing guide: Bathing (including cleaning grease glands)

All the best! have you been given any oral medication or are you back for another check-up tomorrow?

No oral medication but I’ve been told to give a tiny bit of cranberry juice in her water? She said if it doesn’t clear up to get a wee sample and take her back xx
