Hey there,
I’m so worried my wee girl has bumble foot. I’ve posted before about spurs but when doing her feet and nails today there’s a black spot.
Her feet aren’t the best because she’s a rescue piggie and came from not the best conditions so,her nails are thick and curling.
I’ve been trying to trim nails and clean feet every week to ensure they’re take care of but today I noticed this and am so worried. I have attached a photo..
I’m going to get her to the vet next week I think anyway to check over her feet as they’re stressing my out 😬
Thanks in advance

There should not be a wound like that; it could be bumblefoot, and definitely warrants a visit to the vet. Often there is an underlying health problem that means the piggie isn't as mobile or has poor circulation, so that's another reason why a vet visit is necessary.

It's not all bad news though, as it can be treated. Good luck at the vets.

@Camisla Try not to worry, if it is bumblefoot then you've caught it early. It could be a scab from a spur that's ripped off but it's definitely worth getting it checked.

When one of my boys got it I got some Vetbed bedding for him as it's nice and soft and I wanted him to have comfortable bedding to chill out on after his foot soaks.

Thanks all. I’m pretty worried. I’ve been buying fleece hideys but might invest in the vetbed stuff. We are New Guinea pig owners but her and her daughters sleeping areas are changed every second day, topped up with fresh hay. They also get their full quota of vitamin c veggies each day. As far as I can see I’m doing everything right by them. I pray it’s nothing else underlying. My daughter is very anxious about it as am I.
She is about 3 the rescue centre told me so, not elderly.
She does move around a lot, perhaps not as much as her daughter & cage mate. She’s always first up in the morning for her brekkie, travels round her run ok.
We will see the vet on Monday and take it from there.

@Camisla Ask the vet to check her heart. As she's not very old I wonder if she has a heart condition and poor circulation can contribute to bumblefoot. It happened to one of my boys.

Try not to worry about heart issues, there's good medication out there that can help piggies with it, so she'll be okay.

Is she an active pig, or more of a lazy girl?

@Jaycey thank you x
She’s on the lazier side I think. Hard to tell as being first time owners I’ve nothing to compare to. She is however always first up and at the front of the the hutch for food when we peel back the hutch hugger in the morning. When I attach the run she’s always first out for a mooch and will scamper about however she will always go back to the hidey for a snooze. On the grass she always on the move wandering about.
I ordered vet bed last night on amazon so it’s coming tonight ( thank goodness for amazon prime)
Ps JC (Jaffa cake) is the name of our other girl ☺️

Good luck at the vets! Make sure to keep the feet clean over the weekend to prevent any infection. I’m sure it’s nothing you’ve done, these things can happen and it could even be an underlying issue out of your control. :)

Thank you x
So worried it’s sometging I’ve done x

It's very very unlikely that it's something that you've done. But because we care about our pigs we always feel like we've caused it somehow!

JC is a great name for a piggy if I say so myself. Give Jaffa Cake a cuddle for me (my boyfriend said it was a great name too as he loves Jaffa Cakes!)

Oh yeah I’m prone to a wee Jaffa cake or 10 myself 😂

Update on vet, no apt till wed first thing however explained everything to receptionist and she will call me back if vet thinks he needs to see her sooner.
She’s still nice and alert, got vet bed and changed it last night. When I cleaned out bed areas this morn. Was surprised at how much the puppy pad was wet under it!

Hi there,
Back from vets, she’s got antibiotics, anti inflammatory meds and a cream to rub into her foot.
Back in a week.
She weighed her and checked heart and all ok
Just hoping it’s clears within the week. X

Great news. I hope it gets better soon. Good to hear there is no other underlying cause.
Thanks... she’s cosied up in her hidey.. more meds later... wish me luck 😬 vet made it look so,easy! ☺️
