Possible Cheilitis?

image.webp image.webp I need a bit of advice - I noticed tonight that Gizmo has a bit of brown crust in the corners of his mouth. To start with I thought it was just brown on his fur but on closer inspection it seems it's crusty. I've just had him out and I can see a little bit of crust underneath his nose. I'm going to phone the vet tomorrow but thought I'd ask on here in case anyone has had anything similar. I've read about image.webp but I don't know if I'm jumping the gun. Any advice? I've tried to get a photo but he won't sit still!
 
It does look as if it could be. He will need a vet visit to determine if it is bacterial or fungal. Fruit can also make their mouth sore though.

If fungal I would recommend treatment with Nystatin which is an oral medication.
 
I agree with Helen. It looks very much like Cheilitis & needs to see a vet. Its best to avoid high acid foods like tomato, orange etc as these can cause it by burning the skin & allowing infection in, either bacteria or fungal spores, as can chewing the bars of the cage or abrasive materials. A diet rich in vitamin c & vitamin b can help, & also keeping water bottle spouts really clean. He's a gorgeous piggy! Hope he is better soon :)
 
I'm sorry i have no advice to offer but i wanted to say what a fab piggy, is he a swiss as he looks just like a brown and white version of my Frank.
 
Oh wow he's gorgeous. Looks very similar to my Barley but has more white.

so sorry to hear this. If it is a fungal infection antibiotics will be of no use but if it is bacterial it will still be slow to respond and can ake several weeks of antibiotics to cure. A proper diagnsis is needed. I hope you have success with your new vets

I remember my Humbug had something like that when I first got her. She was under treatment for an abcess at the time, and I guess the antibiotics helped clear it up, as they both disappeared at the same time.
 
Hope Gizmo feels better soon - what a gorgeous chunky fuzzy ball of man pig cuteness!
