I noticed about a week ago that Milo was scratching a lot. I checked him for mites etc but I couldn't see any. Today I noticed white flakes around his rump where he's been scratching. It looks like dandruff and it has a waxy feel to it. His friend Peanut doesn't have any itching or flakes, and he lives with him so I'm guessing it's probably not contagious?

I'm bringing Milo to the vet on Monday/Tuesday, but I was just wondering if it's possible for guinea pigs to get dandruff? And I was wondering if anyone knows what this could be. I just like to have an idea before I go into the vets.

Thanks :)

Does the skin itself look irritated? My experience is that flakes are usually linked to some underlying skin issue, like mites or fungal. Do you see any hair loss? Hopefully the vet will be able to tell you which one it is so you can treat it for him! One of my pigs recently got over a yeast infection on her skin, which had white flaky skin, but also a lot of hair loss. Good luck and hope you get the itching stopped!

Thanks :)

Thankfully Milo isn't as bad as any of those guinea pigs. There is some small hair loss and he has a scab on his back. Hopefully it's not to serious. I'll keep you guys posted :)
