Hi there,

I don't often post in the heath section but was just looking for a little bit of advice on Holly, of course I will be taking her to the vets tonight if not tomorow because of this!

On Sunday I had a friend come around and we had the pigs out etc all were fine, Holly went to nip my friend which is most unusual of her, I obviously looked her over but couldnt see anything obvious as to why she may have nipped, she has been absolutely fine, on looking at her monday she was fine but tuesday she has developed a sore patch on her back which is rather raw looking (will attach pics maybe tonight, currently at work so can't) her hair around the area seems to be comming out very easily in small clumps, I havn't noticed her scratching as such any more than usual, but her coat seems greasier than normal (although at first put it down to her needing a bath) I have been wiping this over with cool boiled kettle water with a little salt in, this morning she has another patch of it just below her neck and is very jumpy if touching the area (small patch)

Obviously this is the first time this has happened so am going to take her to the vets but have heard on here that canestan can be used? as i believe it is fungal I am bit wary of using this as i would be putting it on her open sores and i'm not sure if this is ok? I have also heard about using calpol for pain but again am wary of doing this. if anyone could give me any advice i would be very grateful!

Yep it does sound like fungal to me as well. Does she have dandruff patches? Gorgeous Guineas should sort her out if you drop Chrissie a line.

:)

Hi again

Would a fungal infection cause open sores on her back? that have what looks like bled slightly (or very very red) this is why I am vary wary of treating it myself as I'm not sure what can be put on open raw skin!

As Bonnie said, it's not the condition itself that causes lesions and bleeding, it's the pig scratching at the irritation the condition causes. Gorgeous Guineas is good, their Aloe Vera Gel is great for applying to any sores.

Calpol can be given for pain, but I tend not to give when a skin condition is involved (unless there are other problems/the skin condition is chronic/severe) - in most cases, it's better to just get right on and deal with soothing the irritation. That will bring the most relief to the pig.

Obviously I'm going to go to the vets tonight but would they give me something to clear the fungal infectuion up if thats what it is? i've been putting it off last night and was going to treat with canestan but as i sdaid not sure if ok to put on raw skin?

Your best bet is to use GG products rather than most of the junk vets will give IMO anyway, right now i would put aloe vera gel on the woulds and flakey skin to keep the itching at bay until you get something stronger, not sure about canesten i chose not to use it with Boris x

Poor piggie. I hope the visit to the vet helps to sort it out. No wonder you were worried about putting anything straight onto Holly - Get Well Soon!

thats what made me think it was fungal, the self inflicted wounds do look horrible but they are very fixable my boys hair was even beginning to grow back once it was treated so don't stress to much,I'm sure it will be fine because you are getting on top of it;)best of luck to your piggy at the vets xxxxx

All the best to poor Holly!

It must be so upsetting for you!

Best vibes xxxxxxxxx
