My guinea pig Pumpkin seems to have gotten a small piece of hay in his eye, although I’m not for sure if that is what it was. I was able to successfully flush it out with saline solution, but it seems like he has a small amount of blood near his inner corner. I currently have tobramycin drops on hand, which I am using for my other piggy who had an unrelated accident to his eye. I’m not sure if I should be worried or if it will heal on its own. When my other piggy had a white/grey spot in his eye for hay poke awhile back, it healed on its own in a few days. Should I assume the same for Pumpkin as well? I can keep flushing it with saline solution, if needed, I’m just not sure what to do. I would take him to the vet but I am a bit short on funds right now since I am currently playing for treatment for my other piggy. Any tips are appreciated!IMG_3670.webpIMG_3669.webpIMG_3667.webp

Welcome to the forum

While the eye looks clear in the picture (there doesn’t seem to be cloudiness visible - cloudiness signifying the eye has ulcerated), we are not vets and only a vet can carry out the necessary checks on the eye. Fluorescent dye is used by the vet to check for the extent of any injuries. We can legally only advise that vet care is sought for any concern

Eye injuries should not be left to heal on their own, but if you can see blood then it does need to be checked by a vet. Eyes are considered urgent and vet care should always be sought for any injury and on the same day as it occurs. Eyes can deteriorate very quickly.

I hope he is ok
