Hello, about 2 weeks ago I took my guinea pig Beau to the vets as she was making a odd sound every time she breathed and had lost some weight. The vets said she had an upper respiratory infection and gave her some baytril and meticam. This Made her breathing sound normal but it looked like she was still struggling a tad for breath. The odd breathing sound has now come back and she is still losing weight, despite eating a lot. Her Poo is bitty but still solid. Any advise? I am going to take her to a vets more experienced with guinea pigs X

I would advise the vets again

did they complete the course of baytril given?

the poo being a bit off is due to the baytril. It can upset tummies a little when piggies are in it

:agr: And maybe you could support feed - syringe feeding - as she is still losing weight. Hope you have more answers from the more knowledgable piggy.

Please have her seen again. If you can get to a more experienced vet, all the better!

Definitely see the vet (preferably one experienced with guinea pigs) again. I've sometimes had respiratory infections in pigs improve with antibiotics only to worsen again when the course is over- generally the course of meds either wasn't long enough or may not have been a good match for the bacteria in question and another antibiotic would work better. Good luck with the vet!
