hello there i dont come on this forum alot but i may need some help, as I'm a boarding service i do get people dumping hamster, cats, birds with broken legs and everything on me. anyways one thing i have been given is a guinea pig. and thought i could keep her and put her with my other girls. so i did. but someones been round and said she might be pregnant :o whatt? she isnt is she? well this was about tea times today. so i will be taking to vets, but she might of just been over feed right?

The only way to know is to wait. Is she drinking lots and eating more? Sadly if you have no knowledge of past history then there is every chance she could be pregnant.

I don't think there is a need for the vets they can only really tell with an expensive x-ray and it would just stress her for no reason.

How long have you had her? Pigs are pregnant for 10 weeks and you can usually tell my 7 weeks if they are pregnant. Also the weight is a good indicator. Weigh her weekly and see if it shoots up. :)

no i dont have no background info on her, i think she might be a fancy breed :)). right well ill check her weight everyday. I'm about worried though iv been reading up on it and well it says they have a 20% chance that they can die given birth? thats terrible. hmm she seams to be drinken and eating to different

They can get Toxemia in pregnancy so be aware of that. Have a look on Guinea Lynx. There isn't an awful lot of info online for pregnant pigs. It's all geared up for why you shouldn't breed which most of us know but then when you find yourself with a pregnant sow through no fault of your own its hard to know where to turn.

I've never bred but read up on it on Guinea Lynx and gathered info from here.. Maybe go through some old threads in the pregnancy section. Is she looking plump? :)

do you have any male guines pigs? our went through phantom pregnancies, after being introduced to our (freshly neutered) boars. PLEASE DON'T XRAY, they sedate the pig. we lost Mrs Miggins that way.

This won't be a popular comment...... but, if you have a trustworthy breeder nearby, they'd be able to tell you if she was pregnant faster than a vet could.

Good Luck.

well i best start reading just in case she is. ermm well shes chuby and also bigger than my girls on the tummy id she double the size on the tummy but that might be because of different breed. I'm abit worried do you think i will be ok looking after a pregnant piggy and babies? I dont want to give her up at all but i have no idea what I'm doing?

that website looks great might sit down and have a good read of it.

You'll be fine if she is pregnant, I know it's a worry but don't stress. Just read all you can. My biggest sow Fleur went through a phantom pregnancy (didn't help that my boys paid her a visit) thankfully she wasn't pregnant but for weeks we certainly thought she was. :)

Hi Jesska
Sorry to hear about your worry with your sow.
Have you placed her on your lap, on an old towel, with her head facing away from you and felt her tummy? If you haven't, give it a try.

Obviously do in somewhere where she can't jump off your lap and escape.
If she is pregnant, and well into the 10 week term, you will be able to feel little hard lumps within. If she is 7 weeks or more pregnant, then you should be able to feel bones of the babies and movement also.

As has been said above, don't stress too much. Most pregnancies go ok for the mum, sometimes unfortunately the babies are born dead if it is a young mum. I adopted a 7 week blind sow I called Princess (there are threads around on this) and after owning her for 7 weeks, she presented me with a litter of two babies. One was dead :( but Junior, a little boar, is fighting fit. Basically, she was just 4 weeks old when she was mated, I guess probably by her father. That was a worry, but she is fine.

Keep us posted.

thanks for the information guys been really helpful i just didnt have very much knowlodge on guinea pig pregnances but i feel alot more confident now. i will try tomorrow with putting her on my lap and i will have a little feel and hope it gives me a more of an idea if she having babies or not.

also do you think i should bring her indoors just incase i miss anything, or she becomes ill and she needs my help?

she does live with inky and marble and there really close friends but should i remove her from them? ( i bonded her with my two girls when she came and there all brill together )

i will keep you all updated
