Hello, I have been a lurker on these forums for a while learning.

I have had some brilliant advice off some ladies on a facebook forum, but I was wondering if you could help me?

My pig Pop is falling to one side (right) & has head tilt. I think it may be neurological, a stroke etc. she is around 4 years old with no previous medical concerns. Vet gave her an injection of steroids. She is refusing critical care, has drank about 2ml of water & will occasionally nibble on veggies & hay.

Any ideas?
Much appreciated & thank you in advance.

Hi Helen.
I am beginning to wonder the more I look into this. The vet is not a guinea pig savvy one. I am going to get a second opinion tomorrow. She is struggling to walk & it's on her right side. The steroid looks as if it has made things worse. The vet told us just to come back in 48 hours if she has not improved. I can't properly describe what is going on but she has a wobbly tilted head & she cannot control her right side. But my lord is she trying. She's still got attitude & will not sit still, just like she usually does.

Glad you are getting a second opinion, have a look on our recommended vets locator.

Poor girl, I hope the vet can help.

One of my girls passed away from what I think was a stroke, she was on her side and just couldn't get up. She was never wobbly or tilting her head until that point though...

I agree with Helen that it could be something with her ear, since her balance is off. I've had a vet misdiagnose one of my passed guinea pigs, so it's really good you're getting a second opinion!

I hope all goes well, be sure to keep us updated (:

Pop was PTS this morning. She was too far gone to help. I don't know how to console fidget.

Thank you everyone, Pop has just been put in the garden in her favourite fleece. Fidget seems fine at the moment. I'm worried about getting her another cage mate as she has done nothing but fight with every singe piggy I have put her near. But I don't want her to be lonely.

I have my own flat which I have Squeek at (landlord doesn't know about pets) fidget & pop were at my parents. I have suggested after a few days to bring her to mine. I don't want to stress her. Thoughts?

Even a next door companion will provide constant stimulation through the bars. However, you need to be aware that having pets in your flat without permission of the landlord can be a reason to evict you.

Yeah I know, Ive already discussed this with my other half. I will have a division with him when I get home tonight.

Hello SarahLouise,

So sorry to hear about poor little Pop. When they leave suddenly like that, it sends you reeling.
I hope you and Fidget are coping with the loss all right.
I have lost a piggie to a stroke. I found him lying on his side, with his eyes moving rapidly from left to right. The eye movement is the main indicator of stroke.
I had noticed months before that my boys right eye protruded slightly more than the left, indicating some problem inside the head. My vet said that they couldn't do anything about it.

I'm sorry for your loss 7squeakers, I'm so confused. I really did try everything. Fidget seems to be fine at the moment. Hopefully she will be alright .
