I've noticed the past 2 days lloyd is drinking a lot more water than normal and tonight she looked like she was straining and squeaking when going to the loo. I'm assuming it's pain when passing urine, her poops look fine if somewhat a little 'wet'. I will be phoning the vet first thing but is there anything I can do for her tonight to make her more comfortable. Her tummy is soft and she was running laps earlier on so don't think she's in constant pain.
Thanks for any advice

Glad you are going to the vets. For now I would make sure she has plenty of fluids until her appointment to flush any potential infection through. I would ask the vet about an scan or xray to rule out stones though if needed.

Good Luck at the vets today. I'm always very cautious when I suspect a UTI. With a UTI the best thing to do is syringe additional fluids as @helen105281 has advised.

Although this is great for flushing out the bladder, it can sometimes make matters worse if what you are dealing with is a stone and a fairly big stone at that. Of course there is no way of knowing what you are dealing with, without an Xray.

I always found it easier just to jump in and have the piggy Xrayed that way I know what I'm dealing with and how to handle it. Over the year's I had one very special piggy who was Xrayed every 4 weeks due to his increased pain. He did go on to develop stones after suffering with recurrent UTI's for a very long time.

Once a piggy is diagnosed with a UTI. The best thing you can do is syringe fluids. Luke warm water can go down well, if you have ever used Avri-pro probiotics a lot of piggies like the taste of it and will happily take additional water with it mixed in it's also great for the gut flora. Another way is a small amount of concentrate cranberry from Holland and Barrett's with no additives or Pearl Barley gloup my P's favourite. Syringe as much additional fluids as you can this will help flush the bladder out.

Cystease for cats can help line the bladder however I would never give it without checking with my vet first. A UTI can be very painful so pain killers are a very good idea something that should be discussed with the vet. Metacam does have inflammation properties so a great pain relief and tolerated very well by piggies. It is however an off license product. UTI's can be very easily diagnosed pain when urinating, take a sample with you to be checked by the vet under the microscope, a dip test is normally done. This can show blood and infection.

Hope this helps, good luck at the vets today.

Thanks for all your replies. I've can't get her an appointment till tomorrow morning and not even at my usual vets! I will keep up her fluids, she is drinking a lot more than normal which I guess is helping her. She is currently fine in herself, demanding food and acting her usual crazy self.

@lauraboara glad the information was useful. I dealt with my P's problems for a very long time. He suffered from UTI's and stone's for one - two years.

One thing I learned is with constant UTI's it's not unusual for a guinea pig to develop stones don't get complacent. I am a firm believer of regular Xray's every or even ultrasounds 6 weeks if a piggy has constant cystitis , my vet did them without GA. It allowed us to tackle the stones when they appeared and it avoided a lot more pain for P.

We just got back from the vets. Lloyd was a little star but so much so the vet couldn't find anything wrong! He suspects either a uti or the start of bladder stones but wasn't sure. He didn't want to put her the stress of an X-ray at this point but sent us home with 10days of baytril and I asked for metacam for her. Overall I was very impressed with this vets, he made sure I knew about giving probiotics and was very thorough. They're not an exotics vet but he checked her teeth and gave a good general check over as well. Fingers crossed she feels better soon x

I hope the Baytril helps. If there is not improvement I would ask them about Septrin as it tends to be more effective on UTIs. Glad they mentioned probiotics.

We recommend to give avipro-plus probiotic with any urinary tract issues as it is the only only one that doesn't contan extra calcium. You give a pinch ideally 1-2 hours after the antibiotic for best effect. Probiotics are being given to help support the guts as antibiotics attack the gut bacteria as much as any other infection.

Please weigh Lloyd daily at the same time in the feeding cycle for the time being. Contact your vet if Lloyd is going off food or developing acute diarrhea (baytril can be harsh on the guts). Also see your vet if symptoms don't improve and come back after the end of the full course; then is the time for an x-ray.

Carnberry juice is a good source of vitamin C, but its effectiveness with urinary tract problems has been strongly questioned. The best you can in order to minimise the actue symptoms is providing lots to drink and also give some mildly diuretic veg like fresh grass, dandelion, cucumber, celery or lettuce in order to flush any bacteria out as quickly as possible. Please be careful to not overdo it, though, or he may get diarrhea.

UTIs are pretty common at the beginning of the lawn season.
