I noticed a small amount of pinkish substance on the girls' fleece this morning. I'm really worried. Could you please share your experiences with UTIs?
 
Do you have any idea who it is from? have you heard any squeaky wees? Ideally you need to take them both to the vets but it would help if you were able to work out which pig it was as the vet may ask you for a urine sample. Treatment is usually with antibiotics, preferably Septrin.
 
I don't know who it was from, no. But Ariel is the only one who sqeaks from what I've noticed, so I'll assume it's her. :( I'll take them both to the vets tomorrow.
 
One of my girls is on ABs at the moment for just the same. They need to go to the vet to be checked and if a UTI diagnosed then to be started on ABs, painkillers and also a bladder/cystitis treatment. My girls never did a squeaky wee but I followed both their movements and put down cream fleece to see who was responsible for the blood in our cage. Also I was lucky enough at the vets for the one with the UTI to do a wee and it was obvious it was her. @sport_billy posted a series of phots showing how to get a urine sample on another thread - you could try the same to identify who it is that is passing the blood even if you didn't get a sample to take to the vets.
My girl also had a bladder xray to rule out stones. Good luck - they are such a worry!
 
I'm taking them to the vets in a few hours. I'm going to look into how to get a urine sample, thank you. Thanks for the luck :) I'm sure they will be ok. It doesn't matter how much money it takes.
 
Good luck, you have caught it early so hopefully it will clear up in no time. The vet will probably prescribe septrin and metacam x
 
You could put her in a :-/ lean container of some kind and syringe her water and give her cucumber then when she weed you have your sample.Good luck at the vets
 
Thank you guys :) I just got back from the vets and they prescribed antibiotics which I have to give the girls once a day. They should be fine, they're back to their usual selves in their cage, I was a bit worried earlier because they seemed scared on the journey to the vets. <3
 
I had a guinea pig who suffered from them alot get a white blanket or towel, hold them separately until they wee to see who it is. Watch for squealing when they wee and also they may sit quite hunched. Get them to a vets asap.
 
All the best! What antibiotic and what dosage are they on? Did the vet check the urine?

Piggies will get used to trips to the vet or on regular holidays. The first few times are always worst.

They're on baytril, 0.5ml once a day... is this a good medicine for UTIs? The vets I went to is pretty good so I'm hoping they made the right call. The girls seem fine today, running around and popcorning as usual. :)
 
Hope they feel better soon! Were they able to pinpoint whose urine it was (just to save you the money on the antibiotics to the healthy one?) When I didn't know who was to blame, I would stick each pig in a separate Rubbermaid container and feed them something with high water content and wait for them to pee- sometimes it is still hard to tell since not every pee will have the same amount of noticeable blood in it, but most of the time I was able to pinpoint the culprit. One of my pigs has bladder issues and chronic UTIs. She is on Baytril as well. For her, the UTIs really do not seem to cause any symptoms besides blood in urine. She doesn't squeak or go off her food or act uncomfortable at all. Hopefully this will fix them up for you.

Thanks for your reply :) I don't know which one has the UTI, no, but I'm not too bothered about saving money on antibiotics just in case they both have something wrong with them. I'm going to buy a cream fleece (thanks for the suggestion skrinzoid) and watch their progress.
 
Septrin is usually the preferred antibiotic for a UTI which they should ideally be on twice daily, but your vet obviously knows what he/she is doing so baytril can work too! I am glad to hear that they're improving :)
 
My girl has just completed a course of Baytril once daily for UTI and it has worked fine. My vets are acknowledged exotics experts so I guess it varies from case to case as on previous occasions we have had septrin.

Is that from Cheshirepet? I have also been given a 10 day course of Baytril for Cystitis from them today. I've been reading on here and I'm worried it won't work now as Septrin is the preferred drug. What dosage were your piggies on? x
 
Yes @LeahsPiggies it was from Cheshirepet and my girl is tickety boo again. As I say I think it varies from case to case as I have had septrin for another piggie previously. Dose is weight dependent I think. My girl is also on nutracys.

Ah I see, it's great your girl has improved. Mine are on 0.5ml twice daily so I hope it does the trick!

were you given probiotics as well as baytril is hard on their tummies
 
It seems they've been cured completely :) No more blood in their urine, and they seem absolutely fine.
