Yesterday I sadly lost both my hamster and my mouse to the rainbow bridge and this has left me in a kind of shock as I was not expecting both to pass so soon (my hamster was over three years old but my mouse less than one.) I have lost 5 rodents in the past 3 months and am now left with one guinea pig who I have been trying to hold out on buying a new guinea pig till I can adopt one or two in spring from BARC but I am finding it very hard to resist the urge now. I saw a gorgeous pig at a shop that shall not be named (chain store) a few weeks ago and she has been on my mind since then but I'm not sure getting her would be a good idea as I cannot quarantine her and there is a possibility that my pig would not get on with her as well. On the other hand I do have a spare 6 foot hutch if things went wrong and the possibility of bringing a new pig inside for awhile but in all honesty I would love others opinions as to whether you think it's a good idea to get her, many thanks :) .

First off, I am really sorry for your losses. They really do hit you hard and when they are so sudden you get the extra shock of it all too to make it even worse.

Who have you got at the moment male or female? I would always recommend quarantine especially with pet shop piggies as they are not health checked as rigorously as rescue piggies are

I have a female pig

It could work out with another female for sure :) As long as you introduce on neutral territory etc....
We have introduced guinea pigs before and there had been a few problematic situations between them but eventually they were bonded but do you think getting one from a petstore and then possibly adopting a neutered male from a rescue in spring is a good idea or waiting to adopt a male and female pair to bond with my female in the spring a better idea?

I would personally wait, but you know your piggy best if they need a friend sooner

I would also like to add that I have extremely exams this year for school and I need to be revising for a few hours a day so I can't spend as much time with my guinea pig as I would like and I think getting a friend could make up for that. 'if' I do decide on getting her a friend would it be possible for me to quarantine the new pig in the shed that my old one lives even though they should technically be in separate rooms whilst a new pig is being quarantined but would good hygiene allow for me to do quarantine in closish proximity?

If I were in your situation, I'd wait until I could rescue a lone guinea pig. That way, if your current guinea pig and it didn't get along, you wouldn't have taken him away from his friends for nothing. If you're anxious to get another piggy now, you could always search other rescues. I rescued mine from a shelter mainly meant for cats and dogs. Also, sometimes those big pet chain stores will have an adoption room.

Remember also, the piggies in the pet store are not used to living outside either so will need to be acclimatized.

Awww those little hamsters are so cute
Sorry for your loss x

Aww great. Where did you adopt her from? What colour is she? I love hamsters. She is going to be very spoilt!

I adopted her from the pets at home adopting section, at the minute she is white with a brown stripe down her back but I'm sure she will change colour in the spring. She lives in a 4x2ft glass vivarium. :)

I decided to hold off on getting my guinea pig Popcorn a friend however I had seen some young females who were on pregnancy watch (sadly) three weeks ago at a local pet store and on Sunday I asked if I could have a look at them again and they were now off pregnancy watch and the one that had caught my eye was still there. I know I shouldn't have but I did end up purchasing her and she has been healthy all the time the pet store has housed her so I did introductions and I'm glad to say popcorn is much happier. I really do wish I could have waited but I just couldn't justify the extra wait for Popcorn's sake however I may still look into adopting a third member in the spring from BARC if that's okay @pig in the city
