Please can anyone help! My new Mum piggy, Little Gem is suddenly retching and desperately trying to wipe her mouth and has trouble in eating properley. She is otherwise well but what can I do to help

Blimey, I have no idea, sorry. Is there anything in her mouth? I don't know what to suggest as I'm not experienced enough in this sort of thing. Hopefully someone will come along soon.

Phoned the vet and they wanted £210 to see her! Just cant afford that, feel awful about it but that really is not on. Any suggestions welcome

its poss she has got back teeth problems=trapping her tounge hope laura ccc4 will come on soon x

Do not let any vet cut her front teeth with out looking at her back teeth first

Sorry, I've got no advice, but this sounds very serious! Sometimes Gilbert gets some food stuck in his mouth somehow and does what you described, but it only lasts 5 minutes and he's back to his normal self.:{ Hope your pig is okay. How is she right now?

Live in Selsey on the South Coast. Little gem is 2. She has been like it since this afternoon, no other problems. She is calmer now but still not right at all. managed to get her drink a little but thats it.

Her front teeth are fine, its all happened so suddenly. She was eating huge mouthfuls this morning

Thanks for the extra info. Is she able to eat at all? Is she breathing ok?

She wants to eat but only managed a blade or two of grass earlier and that was with great difficulty. Her breathing is fine. I wondered if she has a piece of food jammed betweenher back teeth, not that I can see her back teeth but just trying to think whats up

Could be a piece of food stuck on one of her back teeth, would explain why her breathing is unaffected yet she's gagging and unable to eat. It definitely needs sorting ASAP, she needs food going in her otherwise she will develop other problems. While she is unable to eat I would ordinarily suggest syringe feeding, however I would be in two minds about putting anything into her mouth before dislodging whatever is causing the problem. I suspect that she may be able to eat normally once the food (if it is that) is removed.

To be honest, unless someone else knows of a rodentologist or is able to use tools to access the back of the mouth, the only thing I feel is safe - and important - now is to go to the vet. Whatever is stuck needs removing, or she will unfortunately starve and risk serious digestive problems. Sorry to bring it back to that but it is the safest option for Little Gem.

Only other questions I have at the moment - you mention she is a new mum, when did she deliver her little ones? Is she otherwise well, aside from this gagging and inability to eat?

Her babes are 8 days old and all doing well, apart from irritating her at the moment! They would be irritating me too in the same situation! She is, well appears to be absolutely fine otherwise.

Will she be ok until tomorrow morning do you think

I have to be totally honest Maxine, with her being unable to eat and nursing her little ones, she does need sorting ASAP. She'll weaken very quickly if she doesn't get food in her soon, and I couldn't really recommend syringe feeding when there is a potential blockage in the back of her mouth, could lead to more harm than good.

By tomorrow morning, she'd probably still be alive, but if she's not dislodged whatever this if by herself and started eating again - you'd notice her looking ill.

Ok thank you so much Laura for all your help. Will let you know how we go. Just a thought, if the worst happens would the babies be ok without their Mum at their age. They are eating anything I give them now

How is Little Gem today, Maxine - did you get to the bottom of her problem?

She is a lot better thanks. Tucking into her food again but still not quite right. She is drinking fine, eating grass but fussing over dried food. Will take her to my usual vet tomorrow if no better as i feel I can trust him. Babes are all fine too. thanks for asking
