My rescued mother of 2 has been diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst, she is going to have a full anaesthetic to have it drained this week. I dont know her age (but she managed 2 pregnancies and deliveries unaided and in close succession so we assume she must be less than 3),and although Ive been told she will be under for less than 10 mins I'm really worried. None of my previous piggys have had anaesthetic and I wondered if anyone can give advice on after care. Also do I need to keep her apart from her 18month old "baby" girls initially? Thanks.

Hi! Cyst draining doesn't necessarily need a full GA. Your girl should be able to return to her family straight away.
Complications are generally connected to how long a piggy is under; the longer the higher the risk. Yours is very short.

10 mins is a very short time to be under. When Christian had his life saving op 2 weeks ago he was under for and hour and 5 minutes! It took a while for him to come round and I had to syringe feed him for a few days (and nights) to get him eating again but he had had a super major op now he is fine and almost back to his cheeky self. I'm sure your girly will be fine.

😀 Thank you! Much appreciated. I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing 😊

For what it's worth, three of my pigs were under anesthesia for longer than 10 minutes, one for a cyst removal and two for dental issues/abscesses, and all did well with the anesthesia. Inhaled anesthesia is safest for small animals. I never had to do any particular aftercare for my pigs, and only one of them was still groggy upon coming home, though I think that was more due to pain relief than anesthesia. She had a really nasty, deep abscess cleaned out in her cheek and the vet gave her some narcotic pain relief because he had to cut through some muscle and thought she would be quite sore when she woke up. And even she was on her feet and able to eat when she came home- just took her longer to be picked up and she was a little spaced out for a day or so.
