Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar piggy situation after bladder stone surgery where a week after there surgery they have completely gone off eating hay on there own. Rolo eats all his veggies and drinks water but does not go to his pellets or hay which means we give him critical care in between.

Just looking for some advice☺️

I’m so sorry Rolo isn’t eating. Has he had his post op vet appointment yet? Also is he on pain killers still?

His going in today a day early due to not pooing enough and still on his baytril and painkillers too. He eats all his veggies and drinks water but hay is a struggle he will only go to it if i move his house out😫

I’m sorry to hear this

Keep up with daily weight checks and plenty of syringe feeding while he isn’t eating hay - 60ml or more of syringe feed per day is likely needed to keep weight stable.

Make sure to put hay in his house so he doesn’t have to come out to eat it

What dosage of painkillers is he on? Is he getting them twice a day?

Thank you for this advice i will put some hay in his house 🙂 his on 0.28 ml once a day. His currently on Rheumocam and baytril but I'm not sure if he could of started a gut stasis

Also rolo hasn’t really pooped much which makes me think could his digestive system slow down

The poo output runs 1-2 days behind the food intake. What you are seeing now is reflecting what he has eaten yesterday. Please keep on trying to get at least 40-60 ml of syringe feed into him; 40 ml is the scant survival bottom line - ideally you are aiming for more. Also make sure to offer him water in between feeds but please don't just squirt it in.

Tips For Post-operative Care

How many days post-op are you now? Infections can typically happen in the second week post-op.

Thank you for all of this information.
Rolo is a week today post operation still on baytril and painkillers. How long does it take for the poos to come back to normal after a bladder surgery.

The day after he is eating fully; that can be as early day 2-3 post-op or - if he has a slow recovery - it can take a lot longer, running into weeks or even months. There is no firm rule and a set length of time, unfortunately.
You have to support your piggy for as long as it takes, as there is no other choice. I have been there myself, so I do fully sympathise.

If there is any deterioration please contact your vet clinic in case there are secondary complications coming up. What dosage of painkillers is he on and what is his current weight? If the stone has done some more serious damage to the bladder walls, then he would need a maxed out dosage to deal with the bladder trauma while it heals. It is good that your vet has prescribed dog strength metacam in the first place.

Wishing you all the best. It is an anxious time.

Ask the vet for a gut stimulant. Make sure the metacalm dosage is high enough. One of my girls was prescribed 0.45 mls twice a day (dog strength) x

One of my girls had a stone removed last year and was initially prescribed 0.25ml and it felt like a slow process, we went back and they increased to 0.4 and it literally made all the difference she improved by about 80% in less than 48hrs. I would recommend having a chat with your vet about doses when you go back in for his check up.

My girls poops were a bit slow and misshapen for about 7 days before I saw an improvement.

Don't lose faith, keep up with the syringe feeds, weight checks, keep his bedding area clean, probiotics might be a shout as he is on antibiotics.

Sending healing vibes to the adorable Rolo x

More painkillers, 0.28 of anything sounds like very little for anything other than a tiny pig. Bladder surgery is rough on a pig, my Albert nearly didn't make it, but plenty of painkillers and careful syringe feeding saw him through, fibre supplements are a good addition too if he's not on hay
