I've just had my girl in for a dental today. She gradually lost weight over the past month, worse the last few days. Shes had dentals in the past with the last one being over a year ago. However she hasn't been eating as much and last few days barely eating any hay! She also lost her cage mate 3 weeks ago.

The vet found her rear molars had overgrown again and has filed them down. He also removed a wart from her hind leg.

She's been started on metacam and baytril. She nibbled at some herbs, grapes and a bit of timothy hay.

Very fluffed up when sitting but I know she'll be sore.

My issue is I can see her breathing and when I put my ear close to her I can hear her breathing. I don't think I've ever noticed this before after suegery. I assumed if she had a respiratory issue the vet would have picked it up? He said she did really well under anaesthetic.

Any ideas?

The breathing will hopefully normalise as any anaesthetics wear off.

Please offer her syringe feed if she is not eating by herself. hay is making over 80% of the daily food intake; a little nibbling is not replacing it.

Ok I will just keep my eye on it then.

Will do, had been syringe feeding her prior to the op and will give her a feed soon. She is munching some hay and nuggets ive laid out in front of her 😁

Just control her weight and the necessity/amount of of top up by weighing daily at the same time. ;)

She took a good feed from me last night. And was eating hay when she was back in her cage. A fair few poops in cage this morning!

Just doing a morning feed. She's lost 30g overnight. Has done a few small poops but they are strung together!

Dental piggies do have strange poops because their tummies have become unbalanced and also disruption in food and types of food I.e. not being able to eating enough hay. Try adding C Vit to food or in syringe food/mushed up pellets. 30gms is the difference between full tummy/bladder and empty, just keep weighing each day to see a trend and keep syringe feeding if loosing weight and hand feeding strips of veg. Grass is often good for tempting dental piggies to eat, Hope all goes well for you and piggie, it’s such an awful time for you both, been there too x

And remember that the poops you are seeing now are a reflection of what she ate 24 - 48 hours ago.
Eddi's also looked strange after his dental, and it actually took a good 3 - 4 days until they were normal again.

Thank you for the comments. The thing is, I know this stuff, but just get myself worked up! Poops are separate now and of a good size 😁
