ive been out and checked boris this morning, and have noticed his very small bump he had on one side of his neuter site has swollen, over night. i check it 2-3 times a day so know how big it was and have been checking the growth rate of it, up until yesterday is was smaller than a pea and could barely be seen, now its about the size of a grape. i am thinking an abscess but am not entirely sure. it is very hard to touch, but he seems completely oblivious to it. eating and drinking fine, no weight loss.

now, my friends boar who was castrated some time ago, also got a lump, when the abscess was lanced, she had to keep it open and squeeze out any goop inside. i have to say, there is absolutely no way i would be able to do this. my stomach simply isnt up to it, and i dont know what to do. plus, money is a huge issue for the next fortnight. in the past, the 2 boar castrations we had done we were very lucky in that we had no issues post op, it healed and was as if they never had anything done, i dont know if the age of boris has gone against him,it took every spare penny we had to get him neutered in the first place.

i know my husband wont be happy to know mr boris is going to cost even more than he has already, but i dont even know if it can be left until he is paid at the end of the month. i really dont know what options we have though, I'm guessing that an abscess wont just shrink down and disappear on its own or people wouldnt go and put the pig through the lancing. what with his tangled bits down in there, and having to clean all that out, and now a possible abscess to burst and keep clear (which i dont think i can) once we manage to get him to the vets, i just wish we hadnt decided on a boar to go with our 2 girls :(

Abcesses can take hold very quickly. Your boys does need to go to the vet.

My neutered boy had an abcess soon after his op. He showed no signs of illness other than a swelling. The vet prescribed antibiotics as he was not certain it was an abcess (there are other possibilities) but 2 days later it burst. I had to squeeze it twice a day and bathe it with salt water to keep it clean. It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, although I am not squeamish. Towards the end a stitch popped out which was encrusted with scabs, so he must have had a bad reaction to it suture material.

Unfortunately, some weeks later he developed another abcess in a different place. It was deeper and the vet checked it was an abcess by putting a needle in and withdrawing some pus. Joe had to have a GA to have it cleaned out properly. Same routine afterwards but there really wasn't anything to squeeze out this time. The vet didn't find another stitch this time but said it looked as if it might have been a secondary infection from the first abcess. It has healed really well this time (fingers crossed).

Your vet might let you pay in installments if you cannot pay up front. It's worth asking.

i am very very squeamish, i actually feel sick to my stomach just at the thought of the pus, and the open wound etc :(

we have talked to our vets about payment options before, but they have said that due to many non-paying customers, they now do not allow it even though we have been with them for many years. we havent found a veterinary surgery anywhere near us that does do payment plans to be honest (guess we live in a dodgy area!)if it was just 2 weeks ahead we could take him in and as long as not too expensive have it sorted. i have never ever put off a vet trip for one of my ill/injured pets, i feel terrible :( i would sign him over to a rescue for treatment but i would feel bad that then they would need to foot the bill.

:0 we should never have taken him on and put him through this :0

Make contact with your nearest rescue and see if they can help you out. He needs treatment as soon as possible. They may be able to take him on short term to get him through this and you can settle up later or hand him over.

Healing vibes for Harley

My 9.5 month old Aby, Harley is poorly and on his second vet visit in a week, has been diagnosed with a nasty bout of Cystitis.
Antibiotics and painkillers on day 3 (today) seem to have helped a little but the little guy is still not eating much :( He seems to be having issues pooing, straining and is in pain. I've just checked he hasn't got a pellet stuck and dabbed a little olive oil on his back passage which seems to have relieved his discomfort - he's actually asleep now on vet bed and a heat pad so appears comfy.
I know Septrin causes upset digestion so have given him probiotics too, he will eat small amounts of red pepper, cucumber and melon only despite enticing him with other nicey things. Hay and a sprinkle of Alfalfa have roused his interest a little but not as much as I hoped for.
He really is a lovely and cheeky pig and his brother keeps sniffing around wondering why he's not playing again today :(
Healing vibes needed for Harley please :)

mallethead WRONG THREAD SORRY mallethead

thank you flips, i think to be honest i am going to have to hand him over. we have just had even more bad news financially speaking (didnt think right now it could get any worse). it is completely unfair on him to leave him with it, i know it, ive wanted to get him in to have him checked for the past few days as i wasnt sure if it had grown at all, now its very obvious it has. i dont even know what rescues there are near us :0

Sending Boris some loving wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeks from the girls and little cuddles from me XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I do hope you can sort something out pronto......it's essential that abscesses be treated (no i no nothing about neuture ones, only facial/toofies ones..)

My Smudgie developed an abcess nearly 12mths after he was castrated. it was so big it looked as if he had grown another 'ball' He had be put out to have it cleaned out & the poor lad ended up with 3 stitches. I had to continue to squeeze the pus out for a week & bathe it with salt water twice a day....needless to say every time he saw me comming over to his cage he would hide behind his sister quivering...I felt soo cruel but it had to be done. when he went back to the vets they said job well done & they discharged him....guess what 2 weeks later he developed another abcess in the same place....the vets didn't charge me again for his treatment only for another load of antibiotics....back to the squeezing ...anyway this time it worked & he's been abcess free for the last 18mths thank god! He's still very weary of his 'cruel' mum.
He's been through the wars as he's now blind in one eye but he's still plodding along aged 3 1/2 very vocal when he thinks its feed time I swear they can tell the time! His Sister has never had any health probs at all.
