Hi :)
I had my boar neutered a little over a week ago, and have kept him on towels ever since. How long should I do this for before switching back to shavings and hay?
Thanks x

7-10 days should give plenty of time for the wound to heal. Has he had a post op check up at the vets yet?

x
Thank you :)
He had a check after 4 days and the vet said he was so well that I shouldn't worry about bringing him in for a second check x

Operation wounds knit within 10-14 days. if he's had a post op check and there have not been any problems with his wounds, you can switch him back to his normal bedding.

I would recommend to check your boy twice weekly for the next half year so you can catch any swelling in the groin area quickly; abscesses can blow up weeks or even months after a neutering operation right out of the blue. Also see a vet asap if your boy suddenly loses his appetite; this is usually a sign of an infection.

My washing machine has just died, so it's good to know it's not a disaster that I can't constantly be washing his towels!
Do you know if there's anything I can do to prevent abscesses, or is it just a case of luck?

There is nothing you can do to prevent an abscess or a hernia. Just be aware that they can still happen a long time after the op and check regularly, so you can have the problem treated quickly. Thankfully, we have got strong antibiotics like Zithromax or marbocyl these days that will cut through most abscesses so they are no longer so much a life-and-death issue as they used to until fairly recently. ;)

All the best with your washing machine; it never happens at a good time, but it could have been worse. :(
