Hi everyone, I'm glad to report that after 4 days in hospital, Pip is back home. He is eating, but not enough, so he is being syringe fed, given fluids and meds, but not four-hourly as he was when he was in hospital. Aidan finally did a test on cells from the lump that I was scared was an abscess; it showed it was just a fatty lump, so he probably didn't need the antibiotics for so long, but at least I knew that it wasn't another abscess and they could stop the antibiotics that may have contributed to the gut stasis.
Thanks for the suggestions I've got from here about how to treat gut stasis - as a result I feel I have done anything I could have done and I'd ordered in Fibreplex, Avirpro plus etc which I've added to his regime.
For those in reach of South Manchester, Ashleigh Vets is now open Sundays and Bank Holidays for a few hours and charge normal consultation fees, even if you book emergency cases at those times. They also have 24 hr cover now, even over weekends etc, which isn't overly expensive. Their in-patient care isn't that expensive either, £30 per 24hrs plus meds costs - I brought him home a few evenings as I could encourage him to eat more and returned him overnight because I've tried feeding every 4 hours at night before and it's a killer!
His poos are now half size but a good texture and although he needs meds, extra feed and water he's definitely improving. I have to go away for work in 10 day's time; I'm so lucky that he stays with the head nurse of my local vet (not cavy savvy but lovely all the same and dispensed extra Recovery etc) and is a favorite with her and her 3 year old daughter because he's so tame and doesn't run away and is also very vocal with happy sounds whenever he's stroked
I really couldn't have coped with another castration that ended badly (I have a tendency to get depressed) so it's great that my Pip is back home. I don't think that anyone else would understand the importance I place on checking the size and consistency of poo!
This is great forum. Thanks for being there when I need you, and when I don't!
