Hi, I had two guinea pigs neutered a few weeks ago and one of them doesn't look quite right. One pig has hard swellings where the stitches were, and a few bumps on top of that. One of the bumps evolved to resemble a blister then popped and scabbed over- that is on the right side in the picture.
I'm wondering if this is an abscess or something that needs veterinary attention?

Ouchie, looks a little painful, i think the safest option would be to take your piggy back to the vet, however, i have no experience with neutering so can't offer much more advice than that!

Firstly Hi and welcome to you and the boys to the forum :)
OUCHIES :... yup that sure looks quite nasty!
Your boy needs to see a vet, he'll more than likely put him on some meds for precaution in case of infection. From what i've read over the years this is something that can happen.

Have a read thru this thread :) one of our lovely members was asking about advice on neuturing...... hope this info helps you and the little man XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Yep that's Chase in the picture, then Chance is my other neutered male and Bella is my female pig.
I'm going to call the vet first thing in the morning. Thanks guys!

Oh poor mite, my goodness that looks very sore, it shouldn't look anything like that!

Good luck at the vets x

Hi! I just came back from an appointment with the vet. They kept Chase so they could sedate him and examine him closely. I'm just waiting for them to call to have me pick him up. They said it could be an abscess.

Poor la'al fella! my Rebel didn't have any of that after his op and was soon back to his usual self.

Abscesses are sadly all too frequent after a neutering op.

If baytril won't work, please ask your vet for zithro-max (azithro-mycin), which has been researched by one of the guinea pig specialists in this country. It is a very strong last ditch antibiotic, but it has saved the lives of several post op boars, amongst them my Hywel last year, who had a very close shave. (He was unfortunately not "done" by the specialist, although I wish now he had been!)
Here are Simon Maddock's contact details for further information: http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/html/contact_us.html

Sending vibes to poor Chase!

I must've been very fortunate or had an excellent vet. I've read too many topics on here about post op abscesses., It almost makes me feel guilty that Rebel had no ill effects whatsoever.

I didn't get to pick him up the same day. He stayed overnight. Then he stayed overnight again. 8...

And then Chance started to develop an abscess as well. I dropped him off yesterday along with some of their food and got to see Chase.

I can't think of anything the vet could've done wrong. The stitches were very neat, they healed up perfectly, and they were also given antibiotics for about ten days post-op, which was meant to prevent things like this.

Chance and Chase came home from the vets. The abscesses are all drained and I just have to give them painkiller and antibiotics for a few days and take them back for a checkup.

Post-neutering abscesses aren't uncommon. If you think about where the wound is, and how close to the ground they are (and how pigs like to sit in their wee/poo!), it's hardly surprising really.

Just be vigilent; the abscesses may return. Weigh your pigs daily as weight loss can be an indicator of a problem (if in pain, or has a temperature etc. they will eat less than usual which will result in small weight losses - this can be picked up quickly and easily by daily weighing).

If in doubt - ask here - there's plenty of people with experience of these things that can help.

I hope they're on the road to recovery :)
