One syringe feed down but she still looks very sorry for herself.
It was my birthday today as well, and I spent most if it worrying about Patch.
Hopefully the probiotics and food will start making her feel a bit better, she was at the vet's from 9:30 until I picked her up at 6:30 - and I'm worried she didn't get much to eat whilst she was there. She's not done any poos since we got back. How long before I should start to worry?

She does look quite sorry for herself poor girl.
What did she have done at the vets? Spay? Dental?

Is she eating and drinking, or are you syringe feeding her?

Maybe try and tempt her with her favorite veg.
And if you are worried about fluids you can wash the veg first and serve it 'wet' or push lots of watery veg like cucumber.

Hope she feels better soon.

And Happy Birthday for yesterday Annaa.

Happy birthday, and good luck - there's nothing more stressful than caring for a post-op or otherwise unwell little guinea. It's good that Patch is upright and looking quite bright, though.

Is that the post-op wound on her back? Was it an abscess / lump?

I'm sure the experts will see your post soon, and will be able to answer your question re: poos.

Just from my experience: a little fresh grass, tasty herbs like parsley / coriander, yummy veg like cucumber / carrots / capsicum, Oxbow pellets and treats, and Timothy hay heads are always popular with my post-op pigs :) Obviously everything in moderation, though, to limit the risk of bloat. Hoping she can eat by herself soon.

She had an abcess from what looks like a bite from our other guinea pig.
She's not eaten much overnight so I'm syringe feeding again this morning. She's taking that quite well, but has no interest in any of the fresh veg I've tried, not even her favourite, celery leaves. She ate a small amount of fresh grass though.
There are quite a few poos in the cage this morning, but they are tear drop shape rather than the nice even torpedos. Is that indicative of anything?

Excellent that she's pooping! The experts may be able to provide more info, but in my experience ANY poos in the post-op period is good :) It sometimes just takes a while for their gut to get back to normal, particularly if they're not eating a normal diet and there's been a period of time where they didn't eat at all - but as long as things are starting to move through again, it's a good sign.

Poor little munchkin, but it sounds like she's on the right track. You're doing a good job, she's lucky to have someone who cares so much about her :)

I'm moving this to the H and I thread to get more help for you @annaa . Poos are good news - so keep,up,the syringe feeding, and also please syringe some plain water to ensure she is adequately hydrated. Has she got any pain relief?

Also, was she given any injections or medications when she was at the vet? Some of them can make them feel a bit woozy for a day or so.

Poo output is good. As others have said has she come home on any pain relief?

I've been syringing 1ml of water to every 5ml of feed as per the syringe feeding instructions on here @VickiA :) and probiotics as well.
According to the list I was given she had atipam, buprecare, metacam, sedator and zantac all as subcut injections.
I've got some metacam to give her, but I'm not sure what time they gave it to her at the vet's, so I'm waiting a little longer to make sure it is 24hrs between doses.

:D I am sure that Patch will start eating on her own very soon. It was not very invasive surgery, like being spayed. She's just got to get over the anaesthetic and then she'll get her appetite back. :tu:

I always tempt my post op piggies with fresh herbs which they can't resist

I'm glad she's back with her friend. Sometimes being with a buddy is a better medicine than observing them on their own. It's possible that she is still working off the anesthesia... some of mine have bounced right back, but on at least one occasion Sundae was very groggy for about 24 hours. It also may depend on meds the vet may have given from pain (the time Sundae was very out of it, she had been given a narcotic for pain.) Hope she makes a good recovery for you! Linney had a similar back abscess removed and did very well post-op! :)

Thanks all. It's the first time since getting our pigs 4 years ago that we have had any medical problems, so it's all new for me.
We have had to split them up again overnight as Patch was continually following mouse around trying to get some poos to eat, and annoying Mouse. We aren't keen on another bite injury, so we will only put them together under supervision until Patch's digestive system settles down again.
