Hello to all,
My little guinea is going in for his neutering tomorrow and I have heard that some people wipe the surgery site using Chlorhexidine or saline or Providone Iodine, has anyone used any of these to wipe the surgery site? I am nervous beyond beleif. Thanks so much for the help!

Dont worry. It will be ok. Chorhexadine is ok, although there is some belief in the veterinary world that it can interfere with wound healing. I would just use simple salt water to bathe the area, but is isnt always necessary. Heres a few post op care tips:

- No shavings/straw/hay for bedding, vetbed, fleece or even newspaper changed often works very well. Key is to keep the surgical site as clean as possible.
- check the wound once or twice a day to ensure there is no swelling/discharge and that he isnt interfering too much. (often piggies like to take their own stitches out, lol. But providing its been a few days since the op and is close/not looking raw it should be ok - if in doubt, call the vets)
- Syringe feed if necessary post op, offer favorite foods and hays, and ensure he is eating well (and peeing/pooing)
- weigh daily for a little while (boys often loose a little bit of weight post op but so long as he doesnt continue on losing nothing to worry about)
- Restrict exercise (not too much floor time, no muddy grass exercise until the wounds healed)

Hope this helps. Need anything, give me a shout.

We didn't wipe anything on our three boys. We inspected things daily, kept things clean and just put a vetbed in there and they all healed up very well without any problems.

Thank you!

Thank you to the both of you soooo much! I am so nervous this morning and your support and words of wisdom are so consoling to me. Really great info. Thank god for the Guinea Pig Forum!
Best,
Lara and Romeo Choo Choo Anderson xoxo

How do you keep all the hay from getting all over the cage? I was told to keep the hay under control and it's just getting all over the floor, I know the cage needs to be really clean after the surgery.

Thanks, got the rack but it still seems to be going everywhere. Thank you so much for the help. :) Paranoid mom am I. :)

Abi Nurse, Romeo is home, thank you for the support, I'm having trouble keeping the hay off the floor and he hasn't eaten or had any water yet. I will try critical care tonight. My vet told me to give the pain meds and antibiotics at the same time. Sounds strange to me. I've read all the threads I can find on gp forum, cavy cages forum and guinea lynx. Thank you everyone for your support, I can't tell you how thankful I am that you are all so nice and supportive. I am so happy you are all out there! x) Lara, S'more, Skunky and of course, Romeo Choo Choo Anderson.
Best

Abi nurse, should I wait until tomorrow to give him critical care and not freak out that he isnt eating or drinking? He has been home for 4 hours now. :(

hi, when our boys were neutered i put in a bowl of the critical care so it was there for them at all times and they would eat that rather than their nuggets for the first day or so, try and get something down thim as its imortant they eat regular

Did you put it in right away? How long before they ate any food? He got home 4 hours ago and just had some water now. I'm such a worry wart. Thank you soo much. Lara and Romeo

hi, yes i put it in straight away so they had the option to have it or not, i put it along side their nuggets so they had a choice, they ate it almost straight away, i also gave some cucumber as its their fave food, thats another thing to try and tempt them to eat something, i found that once the pain relief kicked in then they ate their nuggets fine
is he peeing and pooing as long as you monitor how much comes out then you know that hes taking something

I'd give the critical care and extra fluids anyway...... you need to keep their gut moving :)
You are naturally worrying! that's cause your a loving mummy slave! Romeo is lucky to have you as his nurse :)
Try putting down some big towels folded (i have done this for my girl who was spayed last week) and some little towels in fav places that Romeo likes to chillax. Just keep doing a little spot clean often if that helps.

HEALING WHEEEEEEEEEEEKS AND LOVES FROM US ALL FOR YOU ROMEO XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Glynis, you are the best!! Thank you! Such comforting words, I just feel like I'm swimming around not knowing what to do, although I'm doing tons of research. Choochi was a rescue piggie who was terribly terribly abused, so once he gained my trust I then neutered him, so I think now he's feeling a little lost... I'm going to give him the critical care. Thanks for the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx's too! Good luck with your girl! I'm so happy you are out there! :) Lara, More mores, Skunky boo and my love, Romeo Choo Choo Anderson! xoxo

Poor baby what a horrible start to life :(
Look if you're anything like me (and it sounds like you are!) do what i did and that's do your obs thru the night. Even hand feed some veg to him to keep him enthusiastic as well :)
Thanks for your well wishes Velvet really needs them....
Give Romeo some more kisses and tell him he's a lucky boy to have such a caring mummy xoxoxoxoxoxo

A light...

Because of you! Glynis, I am so daft! So shortly after I got Romeo I could see that he was lonely, I didn't want to neuter him, I wanted to put him with another boar but they would have had to go directly above my girls. Also, my one girl is going on 5 and I didn't want my femme fetalle S'more (aka Mae West) to be alone). So I wasn't sure where Romeo was going to go once I got him, even though I planned not to get him. He is just the most wonderful piggy. Anyway, since he was lonely I started pretending with him that I was a guinea pig, (he has two water bottles bcause he drinks so much water) I would crawl my hand down there and drink from the other spout, pretend to clean myself with my hand, nose butt him and eat hay with him. I would even gently grab some of his veggies and eat a bite. He loved this! Anyway, 10 minutes ago I tried to go back to this and low and behold, after a bit of Critical Care, he ate hay with me and even some cucumber! Thank god! He was feeling like he was abandoned! I am so in love with this little guy, I just feel like he has suffered enough in life. What a break through! I hope it continues through tomorrow. It's all because of your support that I had the strength to think clearly and go ahead with the critical care. You truly are such a gem, I can't thank you enuf. I'll light a candle for Velvet. So much xoxoxoxo Lara and the Romeo Prince! Now, I can eat! :) xoxoxoxoxoxo

ahhhhhhhhhh now that is amazing i've never heard of that before!

WELL DONE!!!
and what a brilliant idea to get him to drink and eat :)

YAY FOR ROMEO XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Try to get some sleep tho as you'll be like this for another day or so XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Even when i put the girls back after a handfeed i often leave another little treat there so that it tempts them to come out, movement is good it also keeps the gut moving correctly!

Edit: it's this forum Lara it's just amazing the advice and support :) I'm happy to have helped a little bit.......... more virtual healing vibes and loves for you all XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Anyone have post op pictures of a healthy surgery site when neutered?

Hello all your wonderful forum angels. Does anyone have any pictures or links to pictures of what a healthy post neutering surgery site looks like? I am trying to get an idea of how well my little Romeo is healing up. He is doing okay, I am keeping a close eye on him. I can't thank you all enough for your help. Lara and the gang. :)

You know glynis, one subtle and vital thing I am noticing is that although romeo needs care what he is really craving is comfort and hang time. I sure hope that you will have a nice weekend, wherever you r venturing to! :) thanks again, you r a gem! Best to you and velvet et all. :) lara, more mores, skunky boo and lov boy romeo choo choo anderson aka choochi choo. Be well! xoxo

My Rebel flew through his op and healed in no time. His wounds were bathed twice daily until the incision healed up. He ate, drank, peed and pooped as normal straight after his op. All clear after 6 weeks and he moved in with my girls only to develop an abscess. He's had it lanced and is now on meds to clear it up and is responding very well to treatment.

can I ask if he had stitches or glue? And what did you use to bathe the incision? :)

He had dissolveable stitches internally and glued externally. I used cooled boiled water from the kettle so it was sterile in a large bowl with a teaspoon of salt dissolved in it and used a clean make up removing pad to clean each incision separately. Now I'm using a weak iodine solution to keep the abscess site clean.

How long to keep gp in post op cage

Romeo has been home now from his neuter since Thursday afternoon, his normal cage has ramps. I am wondering how long I need to keep him in his post op cage. I think he is bored out of his mind! Any advice? Thanks! Lara, S'more, Skunk and Romeo :)

Hi Skelly, Romeo got glue. I have had alot of people recommend Chorhexadine to keep the wound clean, I decided to just do a sterile pad with warm water and just dab it so it's clean. I have had mixed reviews on whether to use anything. :)

Please wait 10-14 days until his wound is fully knitted up and not likely to rip open. During that time he should be kept fairly contained, even though he may not be happy.
