Rebel had all his toys removed from his hospital cage as well as all things he could climb on. His food bowl was down low and he was given a water bowl to save him having to stretch.

So sorry i havent bee around to give advice, i was away at the weekend. So very sorry.

How is he doing?

Yes, its usualy a tablespoon of salt into boiled (cooled) bowl of water, there is no exact amount, more or less will not harm him.

x.

Abi Nurse, Thank you soo much for your contact, it's been a long road. First night no water or food so I got concerned and did a little critical care. Friday a little better, am giving the pain meds, anti bios and some probiotics but his eating and water consumption was sporatic. Did another round of critical care Friday pm. Then Glynis told me to relax! Which was great advice, I was in nurse mode and not in mom mode. So I slowed down and pet Romeo (alias Choochi choo) and realized that all this is new for him too and no matter how good a nurse I was I wasn't really realizing that his reality had really changed too! The food and water consumption is still sporatic, I have stopped the critical care, he is now gaining weight, I am getting about two or three pees a day and about 12 poos. The surgery sight yesterday looked like one of the incision had expanded a bit but no swelling or pus or anything, just more exposed skin. I also went back to my normal routine when I have time which is to put my hand in there and pretend I'm a piggie (which he loves) and pretend to eat hay and drink water and barber him, he purs and purs, I even eat some veggies with him, that seems to really help. I have stopped the pain meds today and will continue probiotics and antibiotics for another week or more. His incision site looks a bit better today, he is bored and lonely and today he was chewing on his feet and it looks like he is chewing some of the hair off. If he keeps this up I will take him to the vet on Thursday. He is a rescue piggy who was badly abused so he has some behavioral/trust issues already. I am taking it day by day and trying not to freak out. Thank you so much for your post. :) I hope life finds you well. Best, Lara, More mores, Skunky boo and my love, Romeo Choo Choo Anderson.

incision reopened and bleeding

One of romeos incisions has opened and there is a little fresh blood. I think I caused it by a mishandle putting him back in the cage. What to do? :( thanks, lara the worry wart

Please have him seen by the vet and wound reglued.

Lara i really would want the vets to look at Romeo just for safety sake! I just feel it's best that they actually look and see...... just my opinion.
When i took Velvet to have her wound checked he said they don't always re glue (as piggies love to chew this) but if it had opened up he most certainly would have!

when to stop the probiotics

Hello all your forum angels. Romeo stops his antibiotic regimen this wed evening. Does anyone know when to stop the probiotics? Thank you! Lara and the gang

Hi Lara, to be safe i'd continue on for another few days at least. I'm actually still giving some probiotics to Onyx on a regular basis as she had horrible tummy problems.

Give Romeo lots of little kisses from the girls and snuggles from me XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Glynis, thank you thank you thank you! your help is so appreciated! xoxo Lara, More mores, Skunky boo, Romeo Choo Choo Anderson

I had Rebel back at the vets yesterday for a check up on his abscess. It's all clear however, the vet has prescribed a further 5 days of Septrim to ensure it's been wiped out completely and been advised to keep any eye on the abscess site in case of re occurrence.

Dear highway man, good luck with rebel, we will be thinking about you! :) lara and the gang!

Romeo, surgery, and many thanks to all you angels...

Well, I don't know what I would have done without all of you, really. Romeo, I think is finally on the mend, he is going back into his normal cage tomorrow (14 days after neuter), I will then stop the probiotics and extra vit c. He will meet my girls mid September. What I really really wanted to say was that there is no way possible that I would have been able to do this and do it properly ( and have Romeo doing as well as he is and that I am sane right now) if it really wasnt for all your love, info. humor, pics, advice and support. I just want to say that all your help has been irreplacable and I am so so grateful. Thank you all so much.
Lara, More mores, Skunky boo and the notorius Romeo Choo Choo Anderson (aka Choochi choo). I hope you and all your piggies are happy, healthy and well.
So many best wishes.

Advice for my little Romeo, now it's an ear infection and some other strangeness

I have a question for all of you wonderful forum people. So my Romeo has finally recovered from his neuter ( thanks to all of you)! Now he has an ear infection, he has always had a head tilt. He is slowly, but very slowly gaining weight. He sleeps a bit more. The vet put him on some ear drops, that didn't help. now he wants to put him on the baytril again, but he just got off the baytril from the neuter. From what I am observing the antibiotics may be helping but are diminishing the rest of Romeo. He is cold, I keep the house as warm as I can and he has fleece and snuggly warm places. He eats KMS hayloft pellet, Oxbow hay and organic wheatgrass, parsley, carrot, cucumber, spring water, dandelion etc. No fruit. I have him on probiotics, he was on critical care but I don't think he needs it right now. This damm infection won't go away and neither will the depletion of the rest of Romeo from the antibiotics. He visits my girls through a grid once a week. I am hesitant to start introductions even though the neuter time should be safe. I give him tons of attention. When I leave the room he cries. He is doing his roundy rounds at least once a day. The doctor is kindof puzzled too and he is considered one of the best exotic pet vets. He is getting Vit. C. I'm just not sure what to do. I am thinking maybe to switch his Baytril to a Sulfa antibiotic. I thought also to treat him for mites even though the vet doesn't think that is what it is. Romeo also seems to have balance and spacial vision issues. He got up from sleeping the other day and fell down for 30 seconds. I love this guy more than anything and I am just wondering if anyone out there has had any similar experiences. I have already read everything on guinealynx top to bottom. Any ideas? Thank you for the time, Lara, More mores, Skunky boo and Romeo choo choo Anderson. May you all be well. Best.

Finally some progress...

Hello lovely forum people, finally some progress! I just wanted to let you know. After a biopsy on the ear and a second check for fungus and now I requested a check for a yeast issue, the swab is clear. The ear is also finally drying up. Romeo had an x-ray, the vet found that there is alot of calcification in both ear canals which normally should be clear(especially for a 6 month old guinea pig). Because of this, fluids do not filter properly through the ear canals leaving the ear prone to infection. He did say we could do surgery and remove the calcification, I am opting not to do that. The vet said this will be something just to be aware of and understand that Romeo will have balance and spacial issues. The calcification is due to an infection that was not properly treated as a baby, this is what the vet said. We also found 6 fractured bones on his feet, which are very old fractures and the vet said probably also due to being broken when he was sick as a baby. I requested to put Romeo on Trimeth Sulfa instead of the baytril since Romeo is having such a strong reaction to the Baytril. So now we finally know, and now I can know how to understand Romeo's condition and the spacial/ ear issues. This is really great news and I feel like it is a great step forward. Without Guinea Lynx and the forums I would not even have known what to look for and what to ask the vet about. You are all so valuable to me. Lara, Skunk, More mores and Choochi.

Glad to hear Romeo is heading in the right direction, sometimes the worse thing is not knowing what's wrong and how to help your little guy! I'm glad things are much better :) x
