Beans, one of our little piggies, had an operation to remove what seemed like a cyst a week ago on Friday. Since then we've kept him apart from (but close to in a seperate cage) from his brother Django as he was picking at his stitches. Recovery seemed to be going brilliant, we'd let the piggies play with us on the sofa every night and keep them friendly with each other. I came back from work today and noticed that Beans has a bit of what looks like an inflamed area at the bottom of his stitched up area (back leg) and a little bit more stitching exposed. Could it be he has either scratched and managed to loosen his stitches a bit or could he have some sort of infection. He's been to the vets several times for checkups the past week and everything seems fine up until now.

Photo attached is of said piggy and his sore area :[

If in doubt, get it looked at. But sometimes, depending on the type of stitches, they will look worse before they look better. When my pig Linney had a cyst/abscess removed from her back, the vet used a kind of 'internal' stitch that was largely beneath the skin to keep her from being able to pull them out. The healing process involved the stitches knitting up underneath, and the skin edges above that were not stitched drying up and falling off (like what a hangnail does, if that makes sense.) It looked worse a week or so after healing than it did right after surgery because the top skin was drying out and separating, which made it look like the wound was more open than it had been before. I took her back to the vet who told me it was normal- eventually the dry skin fell off and she was left with a small scar that looked much smaller than the original wound, but it took awhile and it looked alarming at the time! I would get it checked out (I know my vet does not charge for post-op visits) but it could very well be normal.
