hi everyone , my Guinea pig Gandalf was neutered 3 weeks ago and this evening I've noticed he has a slight swelling on one side , I did a bit of looking on the net , and it seems abcesess are quite common, I'm going to phone first thing in the morning and hopefully get him into a appointment tommroow, I'm really worried though. He is absolutely fine I'm himself, putting weight on , drinking, eating, popcorn, shovelling his nuggets and veg down and doing laps around.

Piggies can develop abscesses for quite some time after surgery, so it's always a good idea to get any swelling checked out by the vets. Sounds like you have caught whatever it is early. Please let us know how he gets on.

A sign that something could be wrong is swelling.

See if you can carefully touch it. If it feels hot or warm compared to the rest of him then that's a sign of infection.

Also, try to sniff it. Abscesses have the most horrendous smell, so sometimes your nose can give you a clue if something is wrong.

Try not to worry though. You've done a great job by noticing something was off and you're going to do something about it.

Problems after neutering surgery is a common topic on here, and one of my friends pigs who I was looking after got an infection in his wound. He recovered fine though with a bit of tlc and antibiotics.

Good luck at the vet.

Hi! Yes, please have him seen tomorrow; the sooner you can get on top of it, the easier. It is most likely an abscess, but hernias or hematomas can also happen. Please ask for a strong antibiotic like zithromax if it is an abscess; just baytril may not be strong enough to really cut through it.

Good points made by @Wiebke and @Jaycey. My Poppy was spayed 3 weeks ago and developed a lump on her suture line. She underwent repeat surgery this week and it was neither an abscess nor a hernia but a haematoma where she had knocked herself. She is absolutely fine now,

Fingers crossed, I hope it's easy to treat  x

It was an abscess, my husband took him, the vet told him it was quite a lot of air in it. Hes on a course of antibiotics now and goes back in a few days for a check up. He did tell me , that if i wanted i could try squeezing it some more to see if anything comes out over the next week.

Flushing is normally the preferred way, rather than squeezing. Especially in an area where there are stitches.

I don't think ill be touching it, if i think it needs more doing to it ill take him back before his check up

Yeah, I'm very much the same. If the vet really thinks you need to be doing anything then it's best for them to show you exactly what to do.

Hope he feels better soon!
