Post-op Vit C?

Just reading up on Guinea Lynx to refresh my memory and I note it also says that post-op piggies should be given additional Vit C?

Have others done this, and if so, how much, in what form and how often?

Recovering guinea pigs can sometimes need up to 30mg/kg per day. What operation is your piggie having? Ive had no problem with just feeding a critical care diet after an aneasthetic. Unless your pig is v v unwell i wouldnt suppliment loads of vit C, so long as you give Critical care (which has vit C in) and once your piggie is eating on there own they get plenty of green veg and pellet/mix then i wouldnt panic too much. Others might say different.

So next question, where do I get it (and is there any particular product name to look for) and in what form does it come? I'd assume powder for dissolving and syringing?

I'm assuming your piggie is going to the vets for an op. Usually most vets will stock either the oxbow critical care or the science selective recovery. Both come in a powdered form which you simply mix with warm water to create a paste like substance which you can syringe into their mouth.

Unless your little one is having a dental procedure i would expect them to be eating by themselves within 24 hours of waking up from the aneathetic.

If your little one is well enough to eat then I would crush a vitamin C tablet and put it on a slice of cucumber. I get mine from the hay experts and I give one to my girls every morning.

Oh sorry, you can buy tablets specially made for piggies like this:

Or just pop into a pharmacy and get some human Vitamin C tablets. Crush them up and pop them in food like piggiefan has said or into the critical care or into water if you like. Some pet stores have liquids you can add to water, so you could also try that. There is no particular brand to look for. I get picky with brands i admit, so i go for brands etc that i trust like the oxbow.

The Oxbow vit C tablets contain calcium so I don't use them. I use ascorbic acid (pure vit C) in a powdered form.

Normal vit C tabs for people are good too - just as Piggyfan and Abi nurse suggested.

BTW just for extra info - Critical Care contains vit C as does Recovery Plus, Recovery doesn't contain vit C so will need a supplement.
