Hey Leigh,

Was the vet concerned about poor gut motility with the pain killer? I don't think this is normally an issue with Metacam. If he is in pain then that really has to be addressed or you probably won't find he's eating enough to maintain weight or put back on the weight he's lost. It is possible to have gut motility medication to keep things moving too. Are you weighing Pip every day? I think that would be vital at the moment. I would really ask your vet for more advice on pain relief, is there a different pain med Pip can try?

Sorry to keep going on about weight but I really cannot stress enough the need for a recovering guinea to have their pain under control before you can expect them to start eating enough to regain weight.

Glad Pip is enjoying his grass anyway :)

Hi Shiny, thanks for the help. Pip is eating well today (was waiting at the front of his hutch this morning which is the first time since the op). He seems so much perkier too. I will weigh him again this evening and each day till we go back on Saturday... his teeth grinding has lessened too so hope there isn't any pain today.

Hi Leigh,
Pleased to hear things are going ok keep us posted on how you get on Saturday. x

That's good to hear that Pip is perkier & more interested in food today :) let's hope he is well on the road to recovery now.

WE didn't get Pips stitches taken out today due to the snow... we have booked in for Tuesday evening. I have noticed that Pips weight went from 1.21 to 1.19 today, so have given Recovery three times today. Pip is eating but just not as much. I will continue to do this until I see the vet on Tuesday.

Shiny, how is Peples doing?

Hi Leigh, keep us posted on Tuesday. See how the vet feels about Pips weight.

Peples has a gap in her stitches, she is bleeding on and off. It does not seem infected but she is on more antibiotics. I am quite pleased at the moment with her. Although she walks around with her mouth on her sisters bum and eats their poo. She has more normal poo's of her own now. All my piggies are losing a bit of weight since losing Bo. They just dont seem as keen to eat. I am hoping they will pick up. Peples is supposed to have stitches out on wednesday but I am not convinced at the moment due to the fact she is bleeding from gap between stitches. I dont want her to fall open it would be devistating.

Love Wiggie x

Hi Wiggie... pleased to hear that Peples is doing well, albeit the problem with the gap in her stitches. Maybe they will put another one in? I wouldn't have thought that they will take them out if there is a chance that the wound will open. I wonder if they can put the superglue stuff on that they use on humans?

Pip has gone into his indoor run today with Eddie, they haven't been in it for nearly two weeks. They are both enjoying themselves and Eddie is doing a lot of popcorning, so I think he's happy to be out of their cage! Pip doesn't seem to be ill or in pain, just not eating as much. I will weigh him again today to see how he is going. His scar seems quite big and the skin is not neatly sewn, but I think I heard that guinea pig skin is quite thick, so maybe not easy to stitch (maybe this is Peples problem...?).

Its good to hear from you again, hope you are in a better place now than you were 2 weeks ago. Time is a great healer (I have lots of little "friends" dotted around my garden... you never forget them but you learn to smile a bit more with each day).

Take care, love Leigh x

Hi Leigh,

I am glad Pip seems ok at the moment. I put my piggies in their indoor run yesterday and they were happy. Lily Popcorns alot. Peples has been upsetting Lily ? licking her bum all the time.
I think the vet wanted the wound to be open to let stuff out if it needs to come out. I wont be able to go to the vets appointment next week, my Hubby will need to decide with the vet about the stitches. I like being in charge so we will need to have a good chat in the morning before the appointment. I think you might be right about the skin thickness, her scar is quite bumpy.

I have cried less this week. I did however have tears going to sleep last night as I have most nights. I have found beautiful soft long hairs this week on my clothes even though they have been through the wash. I am functioning better, doing housework etc. I could not face anything last week.

Hi Wiggie

Well, Pip had his stitches out yesterday (changed the appointment time/day) and he is really happy! He squeaked a bit when they took them out, but is so happy now that he can be on hay again and his normal megazorb bedding. Lots of "chugging" going on between him and Eddie, so think all is back to normal! (Eddie thinks that Pip is a girl !)

How are your girls today? How is Peples wound doing? Did your hubby get to the vets yet or is it later in the week?

Take care, Love Leigh x

Hi,
Glad things are going well and Pip appears to be doing great. My Piggies love hay to, I think they really want it back to lay on. I am using hay cookies at the moment.

Peples sees the vet tomorrow, possibly stiches out then, my hubby knows all my concerns. There was less blood today, every day there has been some blood lost from her wound although not much now. She does have a lump on her back that the vet did not want to take off with surgery as it was complicated and took a bit longer. I am concerned due to the fact she has hopefully (past tense) had cancer, that it possibly could do with being removed. He will ask the vet tomorrow. Her poos seem more normal but she is still eating my other piggies poo all the time.

Debs is always mounted by everyone, she is my biggested piggy so its a bit wired. Peples is not doing it at the moment though but give it time.

Thanks for keeping me posted, and thanks for your support.

Wiggie x

Not sure if anyone will see this as the thread is so old, but Pip has got a small graze on one of the shaven areas where his surgery was done. I noticed it today and the blood doesn't look too much, but it still looks a bit sore. I have tried to bathe it for him with warm water, but he didn't like me doing it. I don't think he likes anything near his rear end after what he has been through.

I am hoping that I don't have to take him back to the vets again, so is bathing it daily the best thing to do for the next couple of days? I will obviously go back if things look really sore or the blood is coming through more/every day. All the other areas where he had the surgery seem to have healed really well. I am thinking that maybe his cage mate has caught him with a claw or tooth. I don't think Pip has bitten himself as he doesn't seem to be able to reach this bit (its right under his bottom just by his genital area).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wiggie - any news?

Hi,

I was told use salt water to bathe peples when she was bleeding. I boiled the kettle let it cool and used lukewarm water with salt. I also have Hibiscrub, I watered it down and used it. I hope my advice helps.

Peples seems ok but she is losing hair? Maybe because her ovaries are out. She is at the vets with Lily as she got a bladder stone stuck, I have other thread. It came out today. Its been the worse three weeks ever.

Wiggie, I'm so sorry that you're having such bad luck. Not only the health issues, but it can't be helping financially either.

I will try the Hibiscrub as we have some of that... I did use cooled boiled water yesterday with a little bit of sea salt dissolved, but Pip really didn't want me to touch the area. I will need to get my partner involved in holding him! He wasn't too sure about it yesterday as he thought he'd get bitten! One of my old piggies bit him once right down to the bone on his finger, so once bitten - twice shy as they say!

Unsure about why Peples would be losing hair, but it does sound like it could be hormonal... and if her ovaries have been removed then she would be going through a kind of guinea pig menopause surely.

Keep me posted, take care xx

Hi Leigh, it is nice to hear from you.

My hubby was bitten by Peples near his nipple he did make a fuss. She was not impressed with the meds. I found she was much better with me alone. I guess I hold her alot more.

I have been very unlucky. The tally is one £1000.00 so far this month! Oh well its just money! I would rather eat less than not help my babies.

Clean the area a few times a day.

I am a bit concerned Lilys belly is hard and sore, I have seen 2 poos in the last hour I am waiting for a wee. She has just had metacam. What was the dose you used for pip? I am temped to give a touch more if needed. She just had 0.06ml. She was going to be topped off with 0.67ml monday under prescription! She has only been home 3 hours.

I reckon I should get something good happen in my world soon?

Regards Wiggie

Hi Wiggie, things don't seem to be going your way at the moment ... mine either, I'm taking Pip back to the vet again this evening as he seems to have developed an ulcer at the site where one of his anal glands was removed. Poor little thing, it looks so sore. I tried the Hibiscrub yesterday but he really didn't want me anywhere near it. I have taken the bedding hay out of his hutch again and have put him back on his fleece as I didn't want any sharp bits poking into the hole.

I haven't a clue where we find the money for all the bills... but we do seem to find it. I am the same as you, I would rather not eat than any of our fur babies suffering.

Maybe you could buy a lottery ticket at the weekend and see if your luck is changing. Who knows, someone must be looking after us somewhere!

Let me know how you get on... Leigh x

PS - I am starting another thread on here about Pips ulcer, but will keep an eye on this one too

I would suggest that you ask for zithro-max as it is a far better antibiotic for skin & post-op issues. Hope he improves soon :)
