Hi my guinea pig recently gave birth and not sure what this could be in her hair? Does anyone know please. She doesn’t seem to be itching much but her babies have been itching a bit so i’m a bit worried.

It does look like it could be mites (more specifically what you can see is their eggs, mites themselves are not visible to the human eye).
If you run your fingers down the hair, you will feel them as little bobbles which will not come off. Mite egg casings stick strongly to the hair shaft.

You will need to have them checked by a vet and treated appropriately (I’m not sure at what point newborn pups can be given treatment).
Please do not be tempted to treat on spec or use any low dosed pet shop products - doing so can mean a vet is unable to make a diagnosis, pet shop products aren’t strong enough to work and given she is a new mum, home treatment could be problematic

I’ve added a guide below which explains everything further

Okay thanks for your help do they need to go to the vets ASAP, can it be fatal if left untreated for too long? I’m able to take them this week but don’t want to have to miss work (if i need to i will) but i’d rather not. Will they be okay until the weekend? and how at risk are the babies?
