Potters Tablets

Know what I just noticed. It's his nail!

He has a funny nail on one of his front feet, been like it ages. On the last vet visit he got tissue & tried to wipe what he thought was poop off & I think he has hurt his gammy nail in the process.

I THINK this is the front foot issue anyway, I'm Watching it.... In the meantime he is pottering about & eating quite well.

Well done for spotting. Just noticed your also from Portsmouth ...didnt notice that before... nice to see another local piggie person :D

No. It's not that simple. This evening he is very unsteady on his back legs. I'm in tears. I've given him some loxicom I had leftover he will have to go to the vet Monday. The nail is bothering him at the front it's sore, but his back end just isn't right.

I can't bare it I'm so upset :( he's eating his dinner happily...

I really am so sorry he is stil poorly. I hope the vet can get to the bottom of this and help him. The fact he is eating is very positive. Hugs to you.

the warning about long term metacam have to be given because of the medication group that it belongs to. it is well tolerated, and seems to be more of a risk in cases where the animal already has an issue with the kidneys, in which case another drug can be used instead. the risks outweigh the possible side effects, as with any medication. much better to have the pet comfortable in the present, than worry about the long term what if's. :)

Completely agree with this. I would rather have a pig who is happy and pain free for less time than have them here for longer but in pain.

Sending our best wishes too and hoping that he gets better soon.

I am happy for Rodney to have longterm loxicom, and this is why I contacted the vet yesterday but he told me to buy vit c tablets first to make sure it isn't a deficiency.

I have given him some loxicom I had leftover tonight, and will likely have to take him to companion care vets tomorrow as mine is closed. I just don't think this can be arthritis can it? He doesn't want to walk at all, and when he does is very wobbly at the back?

it could be 'just' arthritis. it is meant to be very painful. and when you think how much inflammation there would be, then i would think these symptoms could be the cause. i don't know if he's had xrays yet, but these might be useful to see exactly where the arthritis is, and whether anything else is going on which might explain why he is so wobbly. hopefully the vitamin c will help aswell. x

He hasn't had X-rays. I am now worried if he did he would be too unwell to handle anaesthetic. The vet said his back legs were thicker and had lessflexibility than normal & he diagnosed arthritis. He did so well on the loxicom, I hoped I could control it with that but he has been off that for a week and is now like this. He's actually got worse since I started the Potters tablets I hope they aren't having the opposite effect!

it would only be a very very light sedation for xrays. some will do conscious but ours do the very light sedation. i know it's worrying though and he may not need them if you and your vets are sure it's arthritis. it does sound like it but obviously if he's getting worse, you're right to talk to the vets again. hopefully there isn't anything else going on aswell. sounds like he will need some long term help to control it. i've not really heard of potters tablets to be honest so can't comment on those.

sending you a hug because it's so worrying when they're not right. x

Thank you, I've been in tears all night he is such a special boy.

He was out earlier and seemed to be doing well but tonight he has just gotten worse, maybe he stayed still too long & got stiff. I don't know. He just seems reluctant to move his back legs & is therefore kind of wobbling & hopping. What a nightmare!

I think an xray is a good idea to get a proper diagnosis. Just throwing another possibility into the mix - bladder stones, they can cause bunny hopping.

oh bless you. have more hugs. x

has your vet mentioned physio? we had to do that for maisie's arthritis ankle and it did seem to help. the vet can show you how, but it's basically just moving the joint slightly each way for a few sets. also, warming your hands and placing them on the limbs can help warm them up aswell. maisie loved her heatpad in winter. i think she knew it eased her. the colder weather can flare up arthritis and it has become quite a bit colder lately so that could be another reason.

there are always so many things and reasons with them isn't there. makes it so worrying. x

No my vet hasn't mentioned physio. God i am dreading the morning waking up to maybe find him worse ;( he hasn't been out at all this evening, just stuck his little head out to eat some dinner. I'm going to take him into bed with me all snuggled & wrapped up in a minute to watch some tv, I'm trying not to move him too much but I feel so upset that he could get worse overnight I think I will have him out for hugs ;(

When I take him to the vet I will mention xray. I only want him to have gas tho I don't want him having full anaesthetic!

Bet my vet won't. I will ask.

If I have to take him to companion care tomorrow do you think they might do it that day?

I lost my dad 2 years ago, and I am finding that I am really bad now with all of this animals illness etc, it makes me feel really panicky & upset. I am going to be a crying pathetic mess at the vets, I wish I could get a grip!

I don't know about Companion Care, but they may be able to. It should be easy for them to xray conscious, my vets even managed it on Nigel who was on springs, they just taped him to the table with masking tape (very loose). Some vets use a box to secure them or a little restraint bag.

Rodney is very very placid, he is literally a cuddly blob - they could easily do it conscious I'm sure. I will ask. He is tucking Into some hay at the mo... At least he hasn't given up eating surely that's a good thing.... When this first started he gave up eating overnight which was the reason for my rushed appt.

Glad he is eating :) Hope the vet is able to do a concious xray and he is diagnosed and treated promptly. Hope the pain meds are doing their job. ((hugs)) They can be such a worry cant they? Bless you x

Horrendous worry. I will never get small animals again. It's just too heartbreaking! And difficult to get a decent vet! Thank you for all your kind words x

Rodney is much the same today, and is still eating so I am tempted to leave him for today and take him to his normal vet tomorrow rather than to a different one today & go throug the whole saga again. I have enough loxicom for tonight...

So true, i travel all the way to Andover for a cavy savvy vet (Anton vets) , but in medical emergencies i am also registered with Harbour Veterinary Group if i need to get somewhere quickly (north end, portsmouth), where i go with my dog.

I have been to Tilehurst in Reading before for him, as didn't trust my vets to deal with his abscess. They were amazing but I needed so much time off work to travel it. I hope if they can just give me meds to keep it under control he will improve. He is out eating hay at the mo :) he's a little fighter my little man!

Where abouts are you? I'm in Fareham :)

I am so sorry Rodney is unwell and you are having such a stressful time. You wish that guinea pigs could talk and tell you exactly what is wrong with them. But it is not a perfect world unfortunately they cannot talk.. So you are getting more worried by the day about him which makes you feel more despondent day. I hope the vet can help Rodney when you take him there. In the meantime I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and hope all goes well.

I'm from Paulsgrove, next to Porchester- so we are really close :) .I also used to work in fareham (until 2months ago :D) I know what you mean about travel, i don't drive so my mum has to drive me to Andover for the vets or i would get a train if needed. Its a pain having so few cavvy savvy vets isnt it :).
Hope you get it all sorted bless him, i have 1 piggie with arthritis (used to be two piggies..) so i know what your going through x all the best for the vets Monday :) x

I live by cams :)

He just, where he has lost weight he looks a weird shape as well it's so worrying. He is out & eating bits I've just given him today's loxicom so he should be comfortable tonight hopefully. His legs are just so stiff when he moves. It's heartbreaking. Still is being a cheeky monkey tho :)

that's cool. My bus always went passed cams :) I understand what you mean. Hope the appointment and xray goes well. They are such cheeky things arnt they? My two were always stiffer at certian times a da..usually when just woken up. As a result i tend to put multiple food bowls and water bottles around the cage (so not as far too walk), also i use a water bowl also...a nice heavy bowl and mine will use this easier than a bottle when back legs are playing up. (It needs refreshing a few times a day...as they somehow do all sorts in it, but it really helped my old girl when her back legs were very bad)

My water bottle is pretty low but that's a good idea. He's currently tucking into some grass ... I just can't believe all this it's come from out of nowhere!
