Has anybody tried this on their guinea pigs? Peter Gurney recommends it when they are aging as it is good for joint pain. I have been giving it to Amelia Jane along with her pain relief as she has arthritis and it really has improved things for her. I started giving it to Peronel as she is the same age and a few weeks later she has been bleeding from down below. I contacted the vet who said just to keep an eye on it as if it was an infection she would not be eating and drinking. I wonder if it is the Potters Tabritis as it is a directic. Any ideas?

A lot of the ingredients are diuretics; these can cause red urine, and some of them are laxatives; these can also cause red urine.

Are you sure she's bleeding? It might be worth getting a urine sample and popping it down to be tested with a dip stick, that'll tell you for certain if it's blood or not.

Firstly - bleeding cannot be ignored - a further exam is needed to try to determine the cause. It is unlikely to be Potters - but suggests something else is going on such as a UTI or stones.

Potters contains diuretics ect and it can;t be ruled out that it could contribute to stones/exacerbate symptoms in a "susceptible" piggie. I would stop giving this immediately until the cause of the bleeding is diagnosed.

Moving on to the arthritis side of things:
Maple was diganosed with severe arthritis in 3 of his limbs over a year ago (by Xray).

He is under constant vet care from my very experienced exotic vets.

Currently I give him meta-cam every day (dog meta-cam with doses increasing over time - he is now up to 0.3ml daily). I also give him trama-dol pain relief for his bladder and arthritis as this seems to be a better pain reliever than meta-cam which is still given for it;s anti-inflammatory properties ref the arthritis.

I have used Potters tabritis tablets on Maples father - Grommie - but to be honest i didn;t see any real improvement in his condition...and in any case Grommie was just "old" - no real signs of arthritis. Potters shouldn't do any harm - although they do contain a diuretic which could be contraindicated depending upon your piggies condition so I treat all herbal medicines with complete respect and discuss with my vet first before giving them.

I think the key to treating arthritis is determining exactly how it is affecting your piggie (Maple gets sore hocks, sits in his wee and is at risk of urine scald. He also loses a lot of weight because he doesn;t eat enough, leading to gut problems and dental problems, if he doesn;t ge daily pain relief). That said as long as he is pain free - he is his normal perky self

I'm happy that now, after a year, I have found the right balance between natural and pharmaceutical assistance for him.

Happy to talk - about arthiritis or Maples "bleeds" which he has been having for the last 8 months (that are completely unrelated to his arthritis)

Pm me if you want my phone number.

Thank you. Amelia Jane is doing fine on her loxicom and potters. I have stopped it with Peronel. The redness could be what you describe Amanda. There was blood around her bottom. I had to listen to the vets and not bring her in as they did not think I should. I will make an appointment Monday if she still is red down there. I have stopped her having Potters just in case.

I know this is an old post but wondered if your piggie was ok? I'm looking to try my old boy on the potters Tabritis. Also where do you buy it from? Thanks in advance x

Amelia Jane is five now. I am convinced the potters helps her arthritis. You can get a health shop to order it. Amazon also sell it but it costs more. Sadly the result of peronels bleeding was due to cancer and I lost her last year.

Glad to hear Amelia Jane is well but sorry to hear about Personels...sending big hugs x
