Pox Virus?

Please help!

I've got to boys that started getting mouth sores around their lips and nose. Then I noticed their feet were red and looked sore, then I saw they had cracked skin around their ears. I first changed all their bedding to dust-extracted-hypoallergenic stuff and took them to the vets. The vet said it was Pox Virus (they had to spend 20mins researching through a book first though!) all they said was to up their level of vit c and give baytril incase their sores get infected. Is there anything else I can do to get rid of the sores? I'm lotioning their feet with guinea pig aloe vera cream, hand-feeding them vit c tablets, giving them more carrots/broccoli/parsley than they can handle.

It's just the sores around their mouths - how can I get rid of them without hurting my poor babies? It's really distressing :0 Look how sore Marvin looks... Harry isn't as bad - it's just around the corners of his mouth

Ooooooh...that looks very sore, poor little boys.

I'm afraid I don't have any medical knowledge with regard to something like that but hopefully someone more experienced will be able to offer some advice soon.

Hope you manage to get it sussed and get them all healed up very quickly. Good luck! :)
 
Their feet are just slightly red (see front and back paws below) I think it may just be the walking around on woodshavings that absorb all moisture out their feet. I'll try something lighter for them - can you recommend any other bedding? (I'm terrified they'll eat anything else!)

I will take a look at this website. I'm glad no one else has heard of this pox virus - I thought it was just me! Am I supposed to leave the sores on their faces or try to soak them off? I'm reading contradicting advice from different websites

If they are indoor pigs, I would use fleece bedding, you get fleeces from everywere. Primark is good are selling them for £2.50 wash 3 times before using, use towels or puppy pads under the fleece.

I use fleece for my pigs and the fleece wicks though the urine leaving it dry on top. I would email Chrssie at gorgeous guinea's send her pictures and she should have something that'll help you.

Also find a new vet (cavy savy one).

I'm sorry I can't advise on what treatment is necessary for the pig, I just recognised the sores from reading about different illnesses. I have no Idea what you should do, Just thought it looked similiar to that link I posted :(.

Btw Galen Garden also do a cream but I would try Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas First :).
 
I too would have posted the link on chelitis, if it is a virus the antibiotics won't do much but if it is bacterial then hopefully the baytril will take care of that.

Definitely get rid of the woodshavings - their feet look as though they have been burned or at least severely irritated from the oils in the woodshavings. Good beddings are fleece or megazorb - the latter you can find from horse bedding specialists. Even hay changed frequently would be better. Unfortunately it's not the dust that causes the problems, the natural oils in pine are a common irritant and most people will not recommend you use shavings.

I'd definitely contact Chrissie too with a view to treating her for fungal as well just in case.
 
If the sores are affecting their eating i would consider treating them for oral fungal with oral daktarin gel you can get from the chemist -don't tell it is for the piggies 0.5 ml 3 times a day week 1, 2 times a day week 2, and once week 3.

I would also avoid any acidic foods like tomatoes
 
Hi Rach, I am sorry your boys both have this problem. Advice is very contradictory over removing the scabs, some say it's necessary to treat the actual problem while others say it's completely unnecessary. One thing I can say though is that a topical cream would almost certainly have more benefit than oral antibiotics.
