Hi everyone. I wanted to get some feedback about a particular drug. Has anyone used Prednisalone before? Were there any side effects? Did it work?

Spike has been squeaking when peeing and pooing since the beginning of February and nothing we've tried has really helped. He's had x-rays, ultrasound and two urine samples which have all ruled out a bladder stone.
He's had two weeks of Baytril with 3 days of Metacam which made no difference then 2 weeks of Septrim (pedeatric Suspension) He got much worse during this time. I then tried diet changes for two weeks incase it was a food sensitivity. He'd been on the rate watchers diet but I've since cut out spinach completely which made an immediate difference, he was only squeaking once or twice a day compared to just about every time but now he's started getting worse again.
I've been to two vets and finally got to speak to Vedra last night who suggested Prednisalone . The problem is my vet is really not very happy to pescribe it because of the potential side effects. She said it can destroy his immune system and can cause diabeties and that she has never used this drug on a guinea pig before. Neither of the vets have been able to suggest anything else but now I'm worried that he could end up with more problems if he does take it. I don't know what to do for the best.

ive never used it on guineas but my daughter has itrolleyes and my dog had it both had/have no side affects with it but it can if used for long periods and high doses weaken the immune system xx

Vedra once prescribed Prednisolone for one of my piggies bumblefoot - it served no use whatsoever. I only gave it for 5 days anyway, since spoke to another expert who was surprised at why it was given?
Maybe ask for the reasons behind the choice of drug and then you need to think are there any benefits to giving it? and then look at the side effects - do they outweigh the benefit?
This it what I would be asking myself :)
Hopefully others will be able to inform you more wisely about the drug :)

Thank you, that's what the vet said. I can't stand hearing him in distress but he's fine in himself in all other ways. I don't want to risk his health more but also want to help him. It's such a difficult decision.

My dog is on it at the moment, it has worked wonders and cured him. Just easing him off it now. Family members too, but no guineas sorry, although I do know Vedra has used this in the past, so must have had some success with it. x

I have not used it on any of my pigs, and I don't know a great deal about it - not much info about it around although I know quite a few pigs have been treated with it.

Prednisolone is a strong anti-inflammatory, a glucocorticoid (steroid). Some basic info and "warnings" included in the link below:

Would the vet be willing to switch to Rimadyl (carprofen) instead?

My gut instinct say it's too soon to resort to Prednisolone, it does seem to be very strong. I will ask the vet about Rimadyl, is that an antibiotic or anti inflamatory?

Rimadyl is an anti-inflammatory - an NSAID so not a steroid like the prednisolone. CCT states that Rimadyl is a very well tolerated drug, preferable to Metacam.

Thank you Laura, that sounds like a good alternative to try. Thank you so much for everyone's comments and information. :a19:

Can't help I'm afraid, but am going through similar sort of thing so I do sympathise. One of my boys had a stone removed a few weeks ago and is still squeaking when weeing. No sign of infection and Metacam doesn't seem to be helping, neither is change of diet, lots of fluid etc. It's awful to hear them when they're in pain. I'm waiting for a call back from my vet and I expect we'll be back there again soon.

Let us know how you get on

Well I took Spike to see a different vet at our local branch. She's not an exotics vet but is the most knowledgable on guineas and rabbits in the practice.
I didn't have the conversation about Prednisalone, I didn't even suggest Rimadyl as Laura had suggested which is exactly what I was going to do because she through me completely and suggested it might be a behavoural problem not medical! I've never thought of that or even considered it but am now beginning to wonder. I always check on him or talk to him when he starts squeeking and he only started doing this when he moved in with Stripes. She thinks that after all the medication he's had and there has been no change he might be feeling threatened by Stripes being close to him or after my attention because I always respond to him.
Has anyone come across this before? Do you think there could be anything in it or a load of old rubbish?! I really don't know what to think.
She has said to try not responding for 1-2 weeks and if there's no change she'll try him on a longer cause of Metacam. (he's only had it for 3 days so far)
I'm also going to collect another urine sample to test again just incase anything has changed from the last two.
Typically he weed on the table at the vets and didn't make a sound!
Have I got an attention seeking guinea pig?!!
Confused of Newbury.

Hello Confused of Newbury, Confused of Huntingdon here!

Did the vet feel the bladder, notice any inflammation?

My view is that there is a chance it's behavioural, I wouldn't rule it out. How big a chance, I honestly couldn't say.

There is a vet I know of in Reading who is apparently very good with guineas; would you be able to travel to Reading if the squeaking problem continues?

Thanks Laura. Is that Jenny Towers at Tilehurst Vets?
She's sees a lot of guineas from Reading Rescue. She's seen him as well but is stumped.

It would be kind of nice if it were behavioural, wouldn't it? I guess it would mean he's not in pain. I really do sympathise... it's a horrible noise they make. Have you started him on the massage pad yet?

It hasn't arrived yet. Think I might have to video his reaction!
I'm convinced it's not behavioural. I went to bed last night so all the lights were off downstairs (they live in the lounge) and I heard him from upstairs. He couldn't of known I was there so it doesn't make any sense.
I'm going to take a urine sample in on tuesday to see if that shows anything up and try a longer course of metacam.
