Hi guys as you know I suspected pixie being pregnant, I gave her a mot and felt something scabby/dry thinking could it be dry milk and I look and she has a open wound so I took her to the vets, they said she’s absolutely fine put salt water on 3x a day, they checked to see if she’s pregnant and she’s not! Which I’m over the moon about but she does have a abscess so they given us metacam and baytril and go back next Monday, I have been soo confused about how she could of got pregnant due to me being careful, so glad she isn’t pregnant though! I’ll get a photo of her wound, it looks clean, still her usual self, eating and drinking 💞

Hi!

Glad for the huge relief re. pregnancy!

Abscesses need to heal from the inside out. that means that you neet to keep them open for as long as possible to allow any pus to drain out. Flush the abscess twice daily with saline solution or any other mild disinfectant like hubiscrub or F10 and pry the scab off before you do so for at least 1-2 days longer than you can see any pus - very unpleasant, but vital to prevent a return.

It says 0.44ml for her baytril but it seems far to much, which colour should I stop at?

Hi! the dosage is perfectly OK! Abscesses require a strong antibiotic, which baytril isn't; so your vet has opted for the maximum. Is it once or twice daily?
PS: A 1 kg guinea pig with bladder problems or a urinary tract infection will be treated with 0.4 ml twice daily as a routine matter of treatment. Guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism and require therefore higher dosages compared to cats or dogs.
 
I will give them another ring tomorrow and ask them about the stronger ABs, thank you everyone x
 
Baytril is about as foul tasting as medication can come, so please have something strong tasting like the same amount of ribena ready to give straight afterwards.

I would also recommend to give a pinch of probiotics either 1-2 hours before or after the baytril in order to support the gut bacteria.

You can also syringe the water in which you have soaked absolutely freshly laid poos from a healthy piggy to restock the guts. This mimics natural behaviour and is more effective than probiotics if you do this with poos as soon as drop out and always fresh. Baytril can affect the affect the appetite. ;)

If your piggy stops eating, please step in with syringe feeding support. The appetite will return once the baytril is no longer needed. Please do NOT stop giving the baytril as getting on top of the abscess infection is important!
Loss of appetite can happen with any antibiotic, by the way.

I absolutely believe in your knowledge I’m a bit nervous to give her ribena, I have a blender I could blend some cucumber feed it her after her baytril, I’ll put some probiotics in water and syringe feed it her so I know the timing for definite and keep using F10 2/3 times a day x
 
See if they will give you any Zithromax or Marbocyl for the abscess, really helped with my Chunk and his abscess 😊 good luck and hope your little one is better soon!

My vet prefers to give natural juice if you need to, so I've used very watered down 100% fresh orange before. But blended cucumber sounds perfect.

If she's not happy with the Baytril I find that giving them a little bit of water by syringe after the Baytril helps to wash the flavour away.

I've only even had 1 pig stop eating whilst on Baytril and after a bit of investigating I found that it was the after taste putting him off. He could still taste it so wouldn't eat. A syringe of water helped get rid of the taste and he started eating again.
 
Hii just gave pixie her medications and using F10 with ear buds, this is what’s come out, is it a good or bad thing?
