Hi Guys,

Can i ask expecting mothers and new mothers a question... i have heard that guinea pig urine can be harmful to expecting mums.
is this right?

Hello. I would think if you washed your hands after interacting and cleaning out your piggies then you will be absolutely fine.

Good luck with your new arrival. 👶

I had a baby in May and beyond good general hygiene practices (i.e. washing my hands after handling, cleaning their cage etc.) I didn't do anything differently, and everything turned out okay. I'm not aware of anything specific to urine but I am certainly not an expert.

I found this guide helpful 🙂

This guide was very helpful, thank you very much :-)

There is nothing common enough to put pigs on the radar for midwives giving out advice in the way that there is for cats, sheep and reptiles. Generally good hygiene is recommended for all animals.
