Hey I have just bought 2 18 week male piggies ( approx 3 hours ago) from the local garden centre but I’m nearly 17 weeks pregnant. Have Just read that they can be harmful to pregnant women but I’ve never heard of this before and have kinda just freaked myself out a bit.
Any help or advice will be massively appreciated.
Also any help with names?
Loz

Congratulations on your pregnancy you must be sooooooo excited!

As long as you follow strict hygiene practices you should be OK

Pressed "Post Reply" button by mistake:doh:.

Make sure you wear gloves (like the ones in hospitals) when you clean out your pigs and wash your hands thoroughly after.
Don't hold your piggie too near to your face and do not kiss your piggie.
If possible ask someone else to clean them out for you.
Wash your hands after handling your piggies.
You may want to have a special piggie jumper or top to wear when you are handling your piggies that you can change out of as soon as you have finished.

I'm sure somebody else will be along with some more ideas shortly.

Whoops have already had them on my shoulder when handling them at the garden centre, and they were very close to my face 😬

Don't panic! The risk from one such exposure will be tiny, and now you know, you won't be doing it again, it's not as though you would be repeatedly having that close exposure. It's not worth lying awake at night worrying (I remember being pregnant and I know that's easier said than done!)

Wishing you all the best with human & guinea babies!

Hi and welcome!

Please take a deep breath! So far (in over a decade and with a number of members having had pregnancies with guinea pigs in the same household) we haven't heard of an actual case where guinea pigs have caused problems.

With some simple common sense measures and good hygiene you can minimise any risk. Please take the time to read this guide here; it will tell you in detail where potential problems lie and how you can work around it.
You should find that it hopefully answers all your questions: Human Pregnancy And Guinea Pigs

Hi there, I dont know a huge amount about guinea pigs and human pregnancy, but i just wanted to share with you that when i was pregnant with my last child, i Had a 7ft ball python. The risk is higher with snakes, lizards ect because of salmonella, but i was super careful when I handled her, making sure to clean my hands, change my clothing ect afterwards, and all was fine :) All animals carry a small risk, even cats and dogs. just make sure you clean thoroughly after handling. All the best with your pregnancy! x
