We have to travel unexpectedly this week, and our usual pet sitter is not available.
Thankfully I have a wonderful friend who will step in and do the animals for me.
She has done them before, but usually only when we go away overnight.
This time we will be gone for 5 days, and I want to try and make things as easy as possible for her.

Does anyone ever prepare their piggies veg in advance and leave it in the fridge (for example in zip lock bags)?
And if so how long would it keep like this.

Obviously I will be keeping their daily fresh food rations as simple as possible, but I still worry it is quite a time consuming job as there are 2 piggy cages to spot clean, plus veg for 2 lots of piggies, plus the rabbits, plus a bird.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

I know my friend did this when she went away but think she was only gone maybe a few days. I think it's a good idea but don't know if you would be good for the 4th or 5th day as it might start going funny

Thanks Kelly - I might try and do it for the first few days at least.
The 4th and 5th day will be next weekend when she will have more time anyway (she works during the week).

when i leave my 23 pigies with my neighbour,i put all piggies on aubiose, cut enough peppers to last 3 days, leave veg that is easy to throw in cages,eg spring greens, kale, mixed leaves pre done from supermarket.i put a brita filter jug of water in the fridge so water bottles can be filled easier.leave a list of instructions !

I went away for a week I prepared really fresh veg and put it in air tight containers such as the klip lock ones. There was a small amount left when I got home and it still looked and smelled fresh. My friend supplemented it to with veg that she had too.

I prepare my veggies in advance in portion sizes and keep them in air tight containers. I work early in the morning and it saves me time and I get to spend more time with my piggie.

I think there was a very useful thread on this forum about the ways to retain different veggies fresh longer.

I use this method for the lettuce:

And peel and soak carrots in water:

Using these two methods, I guarantee that pre-washed lettuce, and peeled and chopped carrots will be fresh for 5 days in the fridge.

Just to add that, if I go away for one or two days, my neighbour looks after my boys and I prepare veg in boxes for each day and this works well. Having seen @RosieMaia 's tips, I think I'll add a piece of damp kitchen towel to the boxes......thanks!

@RosieMaia I always say I learn something new most days on this forum and today is no exception. Fabulous tips. Thank you.
@Swissgreys good luck on your trip and let us know how the prepared veggies fare now we have these awesome tips.

I really shouldn't be taking the credit! :) Someone on the forum had already shown these articles, and all I did was bookmark them

Sadly, I really can't find the original thread.
