One of my Guinea Pigs had ringworm a while back and then I got it.

It started out as one little patch and I did everything by the book...the cream, the washing, the single towel etc...

Its been five weeks and I now have seven patches of it :( One of them is on my neck and is very painful and itchy. I am on antibiotics now to get rid of it :(

...but it doesn't end there unfortunately...

My cat has it too!

The doctors have given me very little advice so I am now seeking help here. Is this just going to be a vicious circle that can never be cured?

The vets are asking for £27 just to look at the cat before treatment. My doctors bill has just been £15 and although this may not seem a lot to some people. It is to me at the moment :( I just don't know what to do :(

I really recommend that you get hold of a good reptile disinfectant (F10 or similar) and use this for everything - cleaning, use it with your laundry detergent and stuff. F10 smells pretty nice actually...

Have you had skin scrapes done and got it confirmed as ringworm?

I know fungal infections like warm moist places, but I'm assuming you have an antifungal cream - could you apply the cream then put a dressing over the top? It'd minimise spread through contact with clothes etc.

Antibiotics won't clear ringworm - it's fungal, not bacterial. You may need to get a second opinion from another doctor. I'm not a doctor but i would get yourself some canestan cream and nizoral shampoo from the chemist. Use the shampoo on your hair and as a shower gel and put the cream on the patches.

Wash you hands between each pet. Your cat will need to see the vet for treatment. If you have any patches on your hands do t handle anyone without disposable gloves on. I agree that you may ned to disinfect a lot of stuff and wash any bedding the cat has. The concern with him is that he may spread spores everywhere so he may need confining until treated.

I say anti-biotics but they are just tablets for ringworm called Terbinafine that 'act by killing fungus which causes infection...the treatment of ringworm.' Nasty side affects though! Never read the side affects haha

Thank-you for your replies. I will bear all of this in mind.

I don't know how I could possibly quaranteen the cat :(

This whole situation makes me feel like a complete walking disease :( I'm expecting men in white suits to come bursting through the door and torch everything :(

I think I may cover my patches up, sounds like a good idea. I've put canestan on the cat so far (recommended by the vet) but she just licked it off.

I think my washing machine just died also :( OH is trying to fix it now...

You need a buster collar for the cat to stop her licking stuff off.

If this treatment doesn't clear it up (Hopefully it will!), I'd ask for a referral to a dermatologist...

And get well soon washing machine!

Just to add. All of my four piggies are absolutely fine. Happy as can be. I'm using gloves to clean them etc.. now just to be on the safe side until I am all clear. I will take Belle to the vets next week if I do not see any sort of improvement.

p.s. Where can I get this reptile disinfectant? P@H?

Not sure if P@H sell it. A lot of disinfectants don't get rid of fungal spores, but reptile ones generally do (the hot and humid environments that reptiles are kept in are perfect conditions for fungal!).

I get mine from here - they're very quick with delivery, their prices are also the cheapest I've found. http://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/reptile-supplies/reptile-f10-disinfectant-range-1389.html
