Not that I'm moaning :) Ours are ok I guess, but something I noticed..

Yesterday, Peanuts had a 0.1ml shot of metacam and it cost almost £4 ... we have a 10ml bottle that we buy for just short of £10, so that's £1 per ml and 10p per 0.1 ml?

10 ml of metacam is £4 something and 10ml baytril just under that. Yet when the vets inject it's almost the same for a whole bottle!

Seems odd :-\

Hmmm i thought that too, really odd

i need to get somemore baytril too i reckon

Paula keeps it all on repeat prescription for us. Cos of the amount of piggies we have and trusts us, we always have some ;)

To be honest, I think some vet take the p*ss...

We dont use our nearest one as hes an old guy that seems to think that a guinea pigs life doesnt have the same value as a dog, and actually SAID THAT to claire (the older lady that helps with my rescue pigs)! He also made a comment about the prices being so high to pay for their time as not many people would bother even going to the vets with a guinea pig...I think that is just so bad! What do people do then? Leave them to die?

Claire was absolutly flabbergasted, she basically took it as 'you are wasting my time by bringing me this animal so i will charge you through the teeth for it' I have never seen her loose her cool but she was sooo peed off!

I know vets do a great job, but i just cant see how they can justify charging so so much, its obvious the owners will pay it as they love their pets.... :(

Sometimes I think vets charge way too much...I mean, of course if you've took your pet there you're going to pay it because you want them to get better or whatever, but what about the poor people (I don't mean poor as in have no money, I been poor as in are unable to do so) who aren't able to take their pets to a vet because of money issues, that's why a lot of pets end up suffering or in rescues. I know vets have to make money too of course, but do they really need to charge SO much?!

I just dont think its fair...

I know before you get a pet, you should make sure you are in a position where you can pay for vets bills or get insurance etc....

But some people just cant afford the vets and you cant exactly take you pet there, get it diagnosed and not get the treatment!

To be honest, although its still awful it isn't surprising that there are so many neglected animals when it is so expensive for treatments. I know when my dog had an ear infection I had to take him to the vet twice in the same week and it cost over £100 for the 2 visits and the drops he needed.

Exactly, yes people should think about vet bills etc before getting an animal, but sometimes people just cannot afford to spend £100+ on whatever their pet needs unfortunately. I think if vets charged less then maybe less animals would be suffering? I think it's more likely anywho.

Its true. Vets do charge way too much and unfortunately they have no regulation authority so they can absically charge what they like. I have in the past phoned the Royal Vetinary College to see if there was any guidelines etc to their pricing but sadly not.

How many people here have noticed that when your pet is on regular medication as my dog was the price varies from month to month - my dog's pills were a different price every month only for me to be told - "they've gone up"

And as has already been said here they have us but the short and curlies - we have to pay to keep our babes well but its not fair, plus they should make the insurance more affordable like for dogs and cats - the guinea pig one is outrageous if you have more than one!

Totally agree. Although Paula and the team charge (sometimes highly), they do allow people to pay in installments and they are so friendly and love animals as much as we do :)

Which is also part of the reason why when Paula left the first vets, we followed! ;) Their manners do count and we've had numerous chats with her about why people don't go to other vets and the dealings she's had with some people :)

piglover where can you get guinea pig insurance from? I've been looking all over for it!

I was surprised to learn the same.

Vets make over 100% profit :-\

And here I was thinking how fabulously cheap my vets are. I had to take Dexter again on Thursday as is still getting infections after his neutering. She gave him 2 injections and a bottle of antibiotics and some science recovery for about £2.20 and she was with him for about 15 mins...
Perhaps it is still classed as post-op care though. I dunno but I do know I shall be sticking with them if everyone else is charging so much more.

Well I paid £10 on Monday just for a follow up visit, Abigail was weighed & checked but thats it . Cost me over £50 so far with just 2 visits. :o

maybe they consider you are paying them for their experience, but I often tell my vets whats wrong when I walk in and they know I know what I'm talking about becasue they say why do you come here ? for the medicines thats why,

I was quite shocked at paying £10 for the last visit TBH if I'd have known that I would have waited as the situation was the same & the advice the same I was there about 5mins.

Mmmm well i'm paying virtually $30.00 aus dollars for metacam and a bit less for the Baytril and Flagyl.
Consult if it's a short revisit i think is now $35.00 my vet charges quite nicely BUT he's been the saviour of Duke sooo many times, so i grin and bare it (LOL that's why his girls give me freebies when they can ;) ;) ;) )
