How long should I handle Maisy each night. I have her out on my lap for about an hour or so each night but this week, she has urinated on me 3 times ! I don't know if I'm holding her too long or its a health issue.

What does everyone think?

Know its probably a really stupid question but I just wanted to make sure.

Thanks all x

We have four pigs and one of them Zippy always urinates on me when i have him on my lap so i really wouldnt worry about it. She probably just has a weak bladder!

Oh good. I am probably being a little over cautious but I wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong.

Thanks for your help x

If your piggie is happy with the amount of time you're holding her for then there's no problems. All the piggies I've had have always urinated on me - it's just what they do :)) You sound like you're doing a fine job :)

you know, there's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to animal care!

hold maisey for as long as you both would feel comfortable. she may have little habits to show you she needs the toilet. for example, ruby, pheobe and sonny nip at your clothes when they want to go back, and bethany starts trying to make a dash for it. maggie-may on the other hand...well, she does nothing and the first you know of it is a warm and wet sensation! bless her, she loves her cuddles x

As Claire said, most piggies eventually figure out how to alert you when they need to pee. Mine get restless and nip me or pull my clothes until I put them down in the cage, where they promptly run off and pee!

I find handling little and often - just 15-20 minutes at most - more often works better than one long cuddle.

I have had piggies who just sit, pee & continue to sit in the same position!
Then there are the others who like to tell you (in my case it is more of the former rather than the latter!:)):)):)))

A funny story though - I have 2 new rescue babies - Billy & Bobby. they were on my lap, as I was sat on the computer, both of them settling down to rest. Bobby (the younger of the 2) decided to reverse to the edge of my leg & then proceeds to pee down my pyjama bottoms!)
Less than 5 minutes later Billy does the exact same thing except down the other leg! To top it all he peed in my slipper! They are only about 9 & 11 weeks old & peed a surprisingly large amount......

It's a good thing I adore them (and have a very large supply of pyjama bottoms for piggy pee emergencies:)))

When I have my piggies out for cuddles, sometimes they can wee on me after 5 minutes and other times they don't wee on me at all :) I wouldn't worry if I were you and just enjoy cuddles for as long as you and she like xx

Thank you all so much for your help. Since my little Missy passed away, I think I may be worrying about Maisy more.

Thank you all so much for all of your advice.

I will definitely have to look out to see if Maisy gives me a sign she needs to pee !

Thank you all x

P's - Madmush - your story made me laugh out loud lol !

That story makes me smile every time too! To be honest, since I've had guineas I've given up on 2 things -

1/ having any clothes without guinea or dog fur on / in them

2/ not being peed on by my boys! I like to think of it as a sign of affection & that they are really comfortable with me! Or that they are too lazy to move....:)):)):))

Well if thats the case, Maisy is really affectionate towards me lol ! x

When my girls are about to pee, they tend to shuffle around a bit and move backwards, then they squat and then it comes gushing out :)) If they are being good, they will lick my arm to tell me they need to go pee pee. The worse thing that my 2 do and they both do it is to pick poo from their bottoms and sit and eat it whilst sitting on me proceeding to drop 'crumbs' along the way x

Twenty minutes

I read somewhere that guinea pigs have a twenty minute bladder time. I know that mine, who all love cuddles, respond to being put back the instant they wee on me. They have all learnt to tell me they need a wee, in their own ways, be put back and have their wee, then wait to be picked up again for more cuddling. It's amazingly good of them, but they do want cuddles and NEED to wee as well so they learn!

I must point out that this takes months however! In the past I have been very warm and damp!
