Hey,

Have had our male pig for a few months now and he's had a few problems. Apologies if this is too long winded...not looking for a diagnosis just a more experienced hand to point out what may have been missed out...

We picked him up, took him home and then wondered about getting him a brother...so the next day returned to get one from the same litter only to find they had been taken out for treatment for a bacterial infection which caused sneezing. Told to keep an eye on George and of course he starts sneezing...so we began treatment using the same meds that sorted the others out. He took two courses over two weeks because the sneezing didn't stop, although it reduced significantly. We then tried an anti inflammatory and his sneezing basically stopped, although is resumed again. So he has a sample taken from his nose which did not indicate any infections. He has now started coughing, but only when he is first taken out of his pen. I have not heard him cough when he is in his hutch or pen. Its like a wee baby cough, he does it once and not in fits. We are now able to video him so we are going to do so for the vet to see. Other than this our pig is healthy and happy, no other signs of anything negative but we do not want to introduce another pig until we are 100% sure there is nothing contagious etc. He has dust free hay, sawdust and safe bedding...sleeps indoors and has a faux conservatory area to play in. We don't use any plug ins or spray cleaning solutions etc.

Will be returning to the vet, who has noticed no problems with his breathing, heartbeat or chest. Just wish I could get a definitive answer, for Georges sake and then be able to get him a friend.

Thanks if you've read all that, any threads that would be useful post a link.

Joe.

Hi & welcome. :)

Maybe you could consider changing the kind of bedding you use. Sawdust is unsuitable and even wood shavings are not always the best option. I use megazorb which is manufactured for use with horses, but lots of people use it for small animals. Others use fleece & vetbed which can be better for piggies with allergies etc.

If the vet gives him a clean bill of health, then I would definitely look for a suitable friend for him. :)

Thank you so much for the advice, meant to say woodshavings, have noted the difference and read the packets to make sure they are pig suitable. Will explore the bedding options you noted MargaretB. Other than that, wondered if he's allergic to the washing powder our clothes are cleaned with...that when he's with us that can make him cough?

It may be that his is allergic to the woodshavings. Some woodshavings are respiratory irritants and can cause some coughing and sneezing. First try changing from this bedding and then see if it makes a difference. The fact that is stopped while on the metcam shows it is an inflammatory response so possibly an allergy of some sort. I have a sow who is extremely allergic to woodshavings and will constantly cough and sneeze if bedded on this. its not so likely for him to be allergic to the washing powder.

Yeah, George hasn't gotten any worse as would be expected with an infection of any sort (he say's presumably), he's active and no changes in behaviour or other symptoms like dull eyes or snotty nose. Just coughs like a baby child when we first take him from his pen or hutch, never heard him do that when he's put away though. I've maybe been too patient and cautious with this, just want to know he will be OK then can introduce a friend to the mix. On another note will start getting some pictures put up and other things figured out on the forum :) Thanks
