Ok, I know I am over reacting but you know when you have just had one of those days and you get home and it gets worse? I spent the entire day helping my Mum clearing my Grandma and Grandpa's house as they left it to me and her and we need to clear it to sell it. It's awful being there with them not, for the first time since we lost them and it was a very long day. Then I come home and my brother, who was supposed to keep an eye on the piggies, has spent the whole time on his laptop.

Basil was looking completely wrong and I dived right in and got him out. He has white fur so it was obvious straight away when I lifted him up, he was streaked with blood. Most of it completely dried but some fresh. Buddy was really frightened looking and sat, paws up at the bars watching me check him over. I tried to stay calm but just started sobbing. Eventually I worked out the cause. Some how he has ripped the entire claw off one of his back paws. His nails were clipped two days ago and I can't for the life of me understand how this happened but it was horrible. I flushed the foot with saline and cleaned it slowly, with spinach bribes! It was still bleeding a little and I used a special pen thingy I bought at the vets for stopping claw bleeding.

He's very slowed off, not squeaking and limping slightly though his appetite is not changed at all. I just really needed to write this out and get it off my chest.

I feel terrible that he could have had that for a long time and no one did anything because my brother didn't check on them at all. I'm going to watch him like a hawk for any signs of infection. I had a piggy lose a claw before, though slightly less bloody and dramatically so I kind of know what to do better now.

I'm so glad today is over, tomorrow can only be better.

Bless you. I'ts horrible when you have one of those days and as you say sometimes you just need to get it off your chest *hugs to you* Poor Basil bless him, and poor you. x

Sorry :( What a cak day for you. Have a virtual hug

Lots of healing vibes to Basil. Hope his foot feels better soon x

Ahh, not long and the new day will be here :) you can start afresh :)
Hope his foot heals up soon &a cheery hug for you :)
Make yourself feel better by putting a piggy poop in your brothers laptop case, tell him he should have kept a better eye on them &they couldn't have left it there then!
Healing vibes &here's to a better tomorrow. Xx

It's horrible when you have a day like that, but Basil is fine now and I hope you'll feel better after a good nights sleep.

Honestly - you would think they could follow simple instructions! Basil is ok now though and that's the main thing.

I came home from work at 9pm last night and cleaned the piggies out in the dark. When I started I discovered that darling Mr S hadn't locked the hutch properly and the top door was standing open (not the first time). Thank god it wasn't the bottom one or they would have been off. Makes you wonder who you can rely on to look after your babies!

Hopefully you had a good nights rest and feel better today. Sorry to hear about your grandparents x

Basil should be fine, I had a piggy lose a back claw and I ain't a clue how he did it a while a go and once cleaned up healed nicely and now has a little nail growing back. Hopefully today will be a better day for you, just remember your grandparents wouldn't want you to be sad they would want you to remember them with a smile x

i know what you mean I went to babysit for my eldest daughter so was away for two days .Left my piggies (two of which are my 12 year olds) with strict instructions and when I came back pebbles and fizz had no hay. Couple of weeks before that I came back to them having no pellets and no hay. The other four had everything and she said she forgot about fizz and pebbles cos not in big cage. She got a big lecture about importance of hay to them. Hopefully she has learned her lesson. sorry about your grandparents BIG HUGS

Thanks everyone. I'm a bit calmer today. Basil is still very quiet but he is eating, drinking and moving around ok so I think he's fine. The claw is broken clean off, right down to the toe but it's staying clean so that's good. I may pop him to the vets for peace of mind mid week when I take Buddy to get his claws clipped (Buddy is the biggest diva pig and it takes two vet nurses to pin him down so his can be clipped)

I'm so irritated with my brother. He says he checked on them at lunch time. His definition of checked? Looked round the door, said "hey pigs" then ran upstairs. The worst part is he doesn't see that he has done anything wrong. He says he tore a bit off his nail before. I pointed out his didn't bleed, he wasn't shaken afterwards and he didn't have dirt all over it with the risk of infection.

I won't be trusting him again though. My Mum is so cross she took away his computer for the day. Have to say, I don't think it will do him any harm to be cut off for a bit

I can empathise with you. My Dindypig ripped a front claw off once, scared the life out of me. It did eventually grow back though.

I would be extremely mad and have gone nuts if my brother had done that. Luckily my parents take over their care when I am away which luckily is rarely.

I can understand how you feel seeing one of your piggies covered in blood and finding out their claw was ripped off. When that happened to my Gilbert I cried hard and phoned everyone I could think of (I was at home alone at the time) and cried down the phone to dad (the only one who answered) and he rushed home and I took Gilbert straight to the vet. It was horrific seeing him limping and bloodied. I'm glad you knew what to do. :)
