Probiotic on a regular basis

Can you give piggies probiotic on a regular basis (once a week) in their water bottles as a preventative rather than just giving them when they're poorly or is it meant just for when they're poorly?

I would not put probiotic in their water; it goes green in no time flat!

You can sprinkle it on their food, but with a good balanced diet you will frankly not need it.

I know some people find it really useful to give impacted boars probiotics in their water but I don't think it's generally recommended for regular use with healthy guineas. I'd agree with Wiebke, if a pig is getting a good balanced diet then I don't think there should be a need to supplement with a probiotic - at best it might just be a waste of money and at worst might perhaps be potentially harmful for a piggy, if they end up getting too much of the various ingredients.

I have no idea but I wonder if too much probiotic for a healthy pig (who isn't taking antibiotics) might even throw the gut flora off balance, as the immune system should already naturally be keeping the digestive system on an even kilter....so it'd be like trying to rectify something which is already in synch!...if that makes sense

The Vetark Pro-C says on the label that it's intended to boost the natural immune system in times of stress or short term illness. If the profit conscious manufacturer isn't trying to make us consumers dose up our animals regularly and keep buying more, then I'd imagine regular use could have adverse effects!
