Jet is prone to mild bloaty episodes. Never enough for the Vet to want to treat him (another story we are still working on that one). I have cut out certain veg, which helps and I have just given him a few days of fibreplex and his tummy is certainly less gassy. However he improves greatly when on biolapidis (and yep I need to get them to do a poop sample - I'm working on that too).

I am about to order supplements (joint aid for the old girl, some oxbow vit c for all of them to help get over their recent poorly phase and I want some tummy support for Jet) - but Biolapidis is expensive considering that I intend to use it long term. I don't mind the cost if it is the best gold standard and there is nothing equivalent, but is there anything else as good?

Are you referring to Bio-Lapis: Bio-Lapis for rabbits - Protexin Or is Biolapidis a different product?

Sorry, I don't live in the UK, and I'm afraid I'm not familiar with all the products that are frequently prescribed by UK vets.

If it's Bio-Lapis, I can recommend another product which I find to be better value: Pro C Professional | Health & Hygiene | The Hay Experts

It's very similar in the sense that it's a probiotic, prebiotic and an electrolyte/vitamin powder, and the pigs like the taste. I believe it's less concentrated than the Bio-Lapis (as in smaller number of beneficial bacteria per gram of powder), but I've used it long-term and it really seemed to help. I always keep a box of it for emergencies.

sorry yes I meant bio-lapis. I will have a look at pro c professional.

I use the Pro-C, have done for years. It's fab stuff. Try sprinkling a little pinch on a piece of lettuce or something for him once a day, he'll likely hoover it up. My Luna recently was on Baytril and I gave her hefty sprinklings of the stuff twice a day over her veg, she didn't even notice. Not so much as a squidgey poo. And now Ceri has been on it for almost three weeks too.

Avipro plus goes down a treat also

I've only tried the Pro-C and the pigs love it, in fact the syringe I'm using atm will need to be binned soon as the pigs (mainly Cissy) have been chewing at it and trying to snatch it from my hands. Almost successfully a few times! :))

My vet recommends the Avipro plus. My girls can’t get enough of it. I just mix up some and syringe feed it to them. They try to mug the syringe off me - must taste divine to them.

Is it better than Pro-C? If it is I might give that a go once they run out of this and if I can find it online. I've also got to get the emeraid you recommended too, next pay day :))

I used to use Pro C but the Vet specifically recommended the Avipro Plus. I ordered it online (Amazon I think) and it wasn’t too expensive. You don’t need too much.

I think Avipro Plus is only a prebiotic + electrolyte solution, but doesn't contain live bacteria. So I suppose it depends on what you want to achieve

Prebiotics are substances that encourage the growth of beneficial bacteria, they're basically their food. By supplementing with certain kinds of prebiotics which are favored by the beneficial bacteria strains and not favored by the harmful ones, you can stabilize the gut.

In contrast, probiotics contain live strains of beneficial bacteria, alongside the prebiotics.

I'm reading here:
Avipro Plus

EU rules on licensing of probiotics have meant some changes, we have launched a NEW fully licensed Avian specific probiotic - AVIPRO AVIAN. This is based on our long standing formulation of AVIPRO PLUS but now containing the new organism. Similarly our small mammal products are ProC and ProC Professional.

Meanwhile AVIPRO PLUS has now has become an all-species prebiotic soluble fibre plus vitamins and glucose.

It began in 1991 and became the gold-standard veterinary probiotic combination of bacteria, enzymes, electrolytes and vitamins. Its high palatability means it can be added to the drinking water making its use simple for all species.

Avipro Plus is perfectly safe and suitable for use in ALL SPECIES from poultry - (table or egg laying) to dogs.

AVIPRO PLUS contains:

  • Fructo-oligosaccharide soluble fibre prebiotic to encourage the natural gut flora improve absorption.
  • Vitamin A, C and E to compensate for the losses occurring during stress and to maximise protection.
  • Electrolytes to aid in maintaining adequate levels during bouts of diarrhoea.
For general use as a routine nutritional aid, 1 scoop per 200ml drinking water can be used. This is especially useful when animals diets are being changed or when they are being transported or rehomed.

AVIPRO PLUS is useful as a long term support.

So it has got live bacteria / probiotics?

No, according to VetArk's website, it only contains prebiotics and electrolytes, no live bacteria. The products containing probiotics/live bacteria are ProC and ProC Professional.

Apparently, Avipro Plus used to contain a probiotic in the past, but they had to change the formula due to EU regulations preventing the marketing of probiotics for both avian and mammal species, so they had to come up with separate probiotic products for birds and small animals.

I really think the AviPro Plus is still a very good product to use, especially alongside "poop soup" as a more natural alternative to probiotic powders.
