Probiotics whilst on baytril- advice please :)

As some of you will know Ruby and Esme are both on baytril for the next 5 days for water infrctions. I got some pro- c probiotic from.p@h as it will take too long to order from the internet, it says one scoop in 200ml of water or sprinkle over food. The girls don't dtink enough to benefit from it being in their water.

Does anyone know the amount to use to syringe feed them it?

pro biotics pro c can be sprinked onto food (1 level scoop per day), it might be an idea to mist the pellets otherwise it doesn't tend to stick and it just ends up at the bottom of the dish. Its always a good idea to give extra vit c when your pigs are ill, fresh papaya also helps with digestion.

If you want to syringe it I'd split it into 4-6 doses (1 scoop dissolved into water) throughout the day rather than one hit.

How much water would you dissolve it in for syringing? and would you dissolve it in the water and then leave it in the fridge for the rest of the day or does it need to be made up fresh for each small amount?

Do you mean mist the pellets from like a water spray bottle? I don't really have anything to spray the pellets with :/

Sorry for all the questions, never had any poorly pigs before. At the moment both are happy as ever, and eating for England. Just want to be prepared for any baytril side effects.

I used the johnstons probiotic from P@H, i can't remember the dosage now, but as my lad wasn;t using the water bottle i predisolved it in water and syringed it to him, but for example if it were 100g per 100 mls, it would be 50g per 50ml and 25g per 25ml so i worked it out that way.... if that makes sense? probably not.

It makes sense, this one just says 1 scoop per 200mls.

I guess I could weigh a scoop and then divide it to get a sensible amount to syringe. How do you know how much is enough to give them?

Esme is quite good and will take water and pellet mush from a syringe, Ruby is much more of a struggle and turns her face away a lot rolleyes.
So I'm going to be pretty limited on what amount I can syringe into them.
How much would people recommend to give at a time?

I will be honest, i gave as much as he would take, usually around 5mls at a time maybe twice a day, there is no limit so long as your sensible. xx
 
I put the probiotics on their dry food today. Alot of sniffing round it but not much has been eaten. I will make some up in water tomorrow and see if they will take it like that. x

Yeah, ours won't always eat the probiotic on the food so we use Avi-pro plus as it tastes nice in water it can be found online easily and syringed with water http://www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-supplemen...ro-plus-p-1225
 
I used avipro plus probiotic too when giving one of my girls baytril. Just sprinkled a pinch of it on to some wet veg and she was very happy to eat it.

I would get some but it would be unlikely to come before they finish the baytril. I may look at getting some to have in. I had to get something quickly that would do the job-given that they take it .

There's always poo soup! Poo for ma healthy piggie mixed with water, it sounds grim but they love it. We always use it when one of ours is on Antibiotics... Hope Ruby and Esme get well soon x

Judging by the amount they pooed in the run just before, I'm sure poo soup could be an option. I could pop Rosie and Tia in the run on the concrete for a while then go poop collecting ;)
They are both happy in themselves and started eating their dry food when i changed it for some without probiotic.

They have both had about 2ml of water with probiotic by syringe so at least they've had a bit if not much :)

Just told mum about poo soup- she's got a disgusted look on her face :(|)

Both still seem happy, lively and still eating. Wise to the baytril now though- I think Esme ended up with some of it on her chin as she turned away just as I was giving it her. Ruby is still pulling her cute little face and pawing everything away.
They had probiotic sprinkled over their veggies and ate them all this morning so that is surely a good thing .I'm a little worried that I won't know if they're any better as they didn't show any symptoms to begin with apart from the weight loss.

I've been thinking- possibly over thinking: Esme occasionally squeals when you pick her up or go to get her but not that often. I have always associated this with her being frightened of being picked up/ left on her own- she does it more if she is the last one left in the hutch. I am now worrying that picking her up may have been causing her pain, but to see her you wouldn't think there was anything wrong. :(

I'm also considering the possibility of bladder stones/ crystals particularly for Esme who is quite a bit older than Ruby.

I'm going to complete the course of antibiotics and then see where we go from there.
 
Classic signs of bladder stones is crying when weeing and blood in the wee, so the white towel trick might help with that, but even if you dont get either of these it still doesn't rule it out, mine winge when i pick them up sometimes too, but there is nothing wrong with them so try not to worry.

How is their weight doing? Is it stabilised now? x

See there was blood in Esme's urine when the vet did the dipstick test, but not visibly.
I weighed them both today. Esme has put some weight on- about 30g. I don't think the weight loss was so big with Ruby, the vets scales weighed her at about her normal weight, but Esme was about the same weight at the vets as when I had weighed her-strange! Ruby has put on a little but not as much as Esme.

I would say I'm more concerned about Esme as she is that bit older that she is more likely to get stones etc.

The squealing when caught is normal, Treacle will do this when she is on meds she doesn't like. She is very head strong and will tell me so :))

Just weighed them all now, either my scales are reading wrong or they have put on weight. Esne seems to be 1180 which is an increase of 50 and ruby is about 1140 which is an increase of about 20g. It is better than them loosing weight.
They're having probiotic on their veg and eating it all up.
I think i will change the batteries in the scales just to be sure x

A follow up to this thread

I have to give avipro plus to my piggie Parkin who is on baytril. I quite like the idea of sprinkling it on veggies, but is likely to be a good idea for his friend Cyclops too? Normally, I would think not, but Cyclops is due to be neutered next week, so are there any implications I should be aware of?
